    Gone this time!

It's a pretty limp poke from debutant Pieter Malan, flirting with a lifter from Stuart Broad. It's high and wide, one he shouldn't be playing at. The edge again flies to Joe Root, who has the choice of catching it or taking it in the mush. He opts for the former.

    England up and running.

Edged! Has that carried? James Anderson to Dean Elgar, through the slips and away for four. It's bounced just in front of first slip Joe Root, who doesn't risk teeth in the attempt to stop it. Jimmy's grumpiness goes up another notch.

Sam Curran's bowling is perhaps a bit underestimated at the moment. He's got a lot of options - he can swing it and has a quicker, zippy bouncer. He's a really skilful bowler.

I'm not sure I'd have a problem with furniture shopping, but I would question as to why you're doing it so early on a Saturday morning.

Seam movement for Broad, whipping the ball past Malan's outside edge. That's enough for Joe Root to call the extra cover back to third slip. With the catcher in place, Broad's line moves too wide for Malan to be tempted to play.

We're trying to find pictures that would back up my theory of James Anderson brushing the grey away. Inconclusive so far. We need the help of the Tailenders. He scurries in under the warm sun, three slips and a gully. When Elgar guides to third man for a couple, between third slip and gully, there an audible yelp from Jimmy. He's cross. Still no swing.

Stuart Broad got driven twice in the previous over, so he has already dispensed with a slip and employed an extra man in the covers. A bit premature to be retreating? The stands around Newlands climb into the blue sky, surrounding the lush outfield. There's a big 'ooohhhh' from the capacity crowd when Elgar inside-edges on to his pad.

England have lots of skill out there. But is the ball going to do a bit? They are pitching it up at least. I'd rather see them driven than cut and pulled.

Anderson, number nine on his back, outside the off stump, with Malan withdrawing the bat to leave. Not much sign of swing. On another note, Anderson's hair is looking much darker than usual. Has he had a touch up?

That's some zip from Broad, too zippy for Jos Buttler, who lets it through the dustbin lids for four byes. When Elgar follows up with a square drive for four, it continues a very good start for the South Africans.

Stuart Broad sharing the new ball, so England's Old Firm are not separated despite the fact one of them may have been dropped had Jofra Archer been fit. Dean Elgar punches through mid-off for a boundary of his own. Ominous.

England have got the same old, same old - which we've had for a number of years. Yes, they're very skilled, but they're all around the same pace. These days you need something different.

Pieter Malan is away with a boundary, cutting an Anderson short ball through point. He has a big smile on his face as he punches with gloves of Dean Elgar. How England would love to be able to call on a batsman with a first-class average of 45.

This South Africa batting line-up is not experienced. It's certainly vulnerable. If England get a start here, they might just get themselves back in the game. You just feel this new ball - and these opening spells - are going to be crucial, perhaps to the whole match.

Here come the batsmen, Dean Elgar accompanied by debutant Pieter Malan, in the South Africa side for the injured Aiden Markram. He's a 30-year-old right-hander with a first-class average of 45.

At the moment, it's James Anderson to Elgar.
