Both Van der Dussen and De Kock currently look much less comfortable facing Bess than they do the pace. He's doing his job, Dom Bess. Economy of just over two. The crucial wicket of Dean Elgar. Justifying his selection.

  3. SA 176-4published at 14:28 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2020

Too short from Stokes, Van der Dussen rolling his wrists on a pull shot that goes in front of square for four. Then another bad ball, down the leg side and tickled fine for another boundary. England don't have enough on the board to leak runs like this. The deficit is down to double figures.

I spotted the influence of Alex from Devon, too. We may be heading into the oddest ways you have managed to influence a sporting contest. De Kock v Bess will be a good battle. The batsman not the most comfortable against spin, but willing to come hard. Twice he slices to third man, for four, then two.

Will De Kock arrive with his usual swash and buckle? He begins with a couple of twos, having only one slip for company. It's a big passage, this. You feel this is where the match hangs. An hour or so have De Kock and South Africa will be up with England. Two or three wickets and England will have it by the scruff of the neck.

Dom Bess gave it large in the celebration, punching the air and screaming in delight. Quinton de Kock is the new man. He'll be facing new bowler Ben Stokes. It's a shame we won't be seeing De Kock resume his first Test duel with Jofra Archer.

Elgar will be furious with himself. An expansive, wild shot.

Remarkable. Elgar has barely played a shot in anger. Root was hanging back at deep mid-off and Elgar thought he'd give it a go but it was a good catch running back.

    Elgar c Root b Bess 88 (SA 157-4)

Why on earth has Dean Elgar done that? From blocking the stuffing out of it, grinding England into the dirt, Elgar has temporarily lost his mind and holed out off Dom Bess.

Two things here. 1. Joe Root, the mid-off fielder, was in the ring, perhaps forcing the mistake. 2. The Barmy Army were in full voice beforehand and the England players acknowledged their effort when the wicket fell.

Elgar tried to loft over the off side, sliced high into the air and the backpedalling Root did the rest.

    Big moment.

The Barmy Army trumpeter starts tooting on the brass to lead the singing. The travelling fans are willing the tourists to find the breakthrough. Broad finds something extra to hurry VDD, who does well to get out of the way. Ben Stokes is getting loose. The scorers have gone to sleep.

James Anderson and Stuart Broad can keep going for another two or three years. England need to look after them. They don't need to play together in every game.

Zak Crawley is at short leg for Dom Bess. He's a tall man, Crawley, so cuts an imposing figure in there. He's almost in the game when Van der Dussen turns on off his toes. Only 16 runs have come from the past 10 overs. It's turgid stuff.

Despite the fact they are not creating much, England's bowlers are doing a very good job of keeping South Africa quiet. It at least means that if a wicket or two does fall, the hosts won't have made much progress towards England's total. The travelling fans are in good voice as Broad bounds in, Van der Dussen pinching a single to mid-wicket.

England aren't far away from being able to bowl South Africa out. But South Africa know if they just keep plugging along then they will get on top.

England are bowling well. It's great Test match cricket. South Africa are 117 runs behind, that's a long way. England are still well ahead.

Ben Stokes is at slip for Dom Bess. Stokes has a bandage on his right forearm and his navy England cap is darkened by sweat. Stokes waits with his elbows on his knees, while Bess does a decent job of plugging the end. Maiden.
