When Stokes takes five from the next balls, it brings up the 50 partnership. Sibley has five of those runs.

A horrible miss and Quinton de Kock should have left that to fine leg.

Should have been taken!
Ben Stokes skies a pull shot and it's flying towards long leg. It's in the air so long that keeper Quinton de Kock thinks he can get there. He shouldn't have done.
His full length dive doesn't even result in him getting a glove on the ball, whereas Pieter Malan could have caught it in his jockstrap.
The bowlers keep coming. Here's the biggest dog of them all, Kagiso Rabada.

South Africa are waving the white flag at the moment.
Back on planet Earth, Sibley nudges Maharaj for a couple to go into the 90s. Every time he is on strike, Sibley gives us chance to catch our breath before the next Stokes assault. The contrast between the two players is an excellent example of cricket's rich tapestry.

Vernon Philander's first 13 overs went for 12 runs. He just conceded 12 runs off his 14th over.
Stokes is scoring his runs more than four times more quickly than Sibley...

What are the chances of Stokes getting to his century before Sibley?
Mike, Sheffield
Philander too short, Stokes cuts for four. He's on 38 from 25 balls.

I've got absolutely nothing against Dom Sibley. If he continues playing like this. he's exactly what England need. But, for now, can we just have Ben Stokes on strike? First ball, he runs at Philander, a miscue bringing a single. When he gets back on strike, a gets a low full toss to the square leg boundary with the kind of shot he played in the World Cup final. I cannot tell you how exhilarating this is.

Ben Howard: Ben Stokes is absolutely different gravy.

Still Maharaj. What's Kagiso Rabada done to offend Faf du Plessis? We're spared more Stokes pyrotechnics when he takes a single from the the first ball. However, he will now be on strike to Philander, which should be tasty.
Michael Carberry
Former England batsman on The Cricket Social
Let Dom Sibley bat and bat at his pace. We don't need to worry about him upping his scoring rate. That will come with the confidence he will get by playing more Tests. Worry about the future in the future.

It's like two different sports are going on out there. Sibley the analogue batsman. Stokes the digital age. In front of a crowd that is down on the first three days (it's Monday, after all), Sibley waits for Philander and defends the shiny new ball. It's an interval in The Ben Stokes Show.

Finally. The new nut. Vernon Philander.

A massive six into the Barmy Army section.
I'm utterly bemused by this from South Africa.
I can only think that Faf du Plessis was trying to put pressure on Dom Sibley and force him to up his scoring rate. But with Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler at the other end, Sibley can take all the time he wants.
