During the tea interval the Barmy Army are raising money to help support three organisations working in Australia to assist those affected by the terrible bushfires. Wires Wildlife rescue, Australia Red Cross & the Victorian Bushfire Appeal will all benefit from the collection.

It would be befitting of this madcap tour if Denly and Root ran through South Africa in the evening session here.

I've done the afternoon session each day of this Test and it's always been the dullest part of the day. Barely any wickets.

    Was it something I wrote?

Anyway, what will England try after tea? Plenty of time and runs to play with.

It has gone a bit flat. The South Africa openers haven't put a foot wrong. England didn't look like getting too many wickets in that session - they need to go away, have a cup of tea and have a think about things.

Is underwhelming a fair word? England batted for a little bit longer than they needed to, then after a few overs from Anderson and Broad making the ball talk, we've had a gentle decline.

    Target 438

Joe Root puts Ollie Pope in danger with a wide loopy one that Dean Elgar smacks under the leaping short leg for one.

Pieter Malan solidly gets in behind the final ball of the session.

That's tea. A fine, resilient effort by South Africa's openers.

They are unscathed on 46-0 chasing an unlikely 438 for victory.

England practising for Sri Lanka in March?

A third spinner enters the fray.

Sadly it's not Dom Sibley's offies but Joe Root's.

Joe Denly is bowling his leggies in big sunglasses on a cloudy afternoon.

A back-foot punch from Pieter Malan brings one.

One ball at Dean Elgar for the Kentish Warne. And Elgar repels it.

Sam Curran bowling well. Pieter Malan bowling well.

    Oh my! A called no-ball!

Wait. That actually was really tight. How has umpire Kumar Dharmasena seen that but not the other massive over-steps?

The sun has disappeared this afternoon and it’s actually a lot fresher at Newlands. Some fans have been telling me they’ve rather under clubbed in terms of what they’re wearing with a cool breeze blowing. But how better to keep warm than wrap yourself up in the flag of St George.

This isn't a bad shout by Joe Root.

After a few looseners, Joe Denly lands his fourth ball in the rough, it spits up at Dean Elgar, who nearly pops it up off the top of the bat.

    Ooshk. And again.

    Penny for Matt Parkinson's thoughts.

Why is the Kent fan in the office grinning widely?

Joe Denly is going to have a bowl.

The third Joseph bowls a bit of leg-spin - plenty of rough to aim at.

The different angle from the left-handed Sam Curran could cause problems.

Curran goes round the wicket to the right-handed Pieter Malan, who leaves on line but the ball keeps on tailing in.

A safe enough leave but not a million miles away. A few groans from England.

Tidy from Curran, who starts with a maiden.
