What does Jos Buttler need to do in the second innings to retain his place in the side? Will a half-century be enough?

The more we watch Chris Woakes in this innings, the more we wonder why he didn't come in ahead of Sam Curran. Nortje doesn't quite get his line right and the Birmingham-born man clips him off the pads for four.

Philander bowls on the toes of Woakes, a leg-stump line, should really have been dispatched through mid-wicket but the England all-rounder misses out.

Broad and co on the England dressing room balcony have a bit of a glum look to them as Wood edges just short of Faf du Plessis at third slip.

Russell Moore: I'm sorry but that is despicable Test match batting from Buttler. He has to go. What happened to Ben Foakes? Surely he's a much better option for the 5-day game?

H J Davies: I think Jos Buttler needs some time out of the team.

Phil McMenemy: What, exactly, does Buttler offer? Flat track bully, average 'keeper.....any advance?

What has he done? Buttler has played a horrible swipe. That is a really sorrowful shot. It was a fine catch by Elgar. That will only increase speculation about Buttler's place in the side.

Watching that replay of Buttler's dismissal, it wasn't pretty.

Mind you, it was a brilliant catch from Elgar, he called it straight away and committed as he ran sidewards.

Mark Wood the new man in. 400 is looking improbable now.

I'm not disappointed in his choice of shot, but he hasn't executed. The risk of doing that is when you get out it looks horrendous. I'd rather he got out in that way than being cautious and nicking one behind.

That's not one Jos Buttler will want to see again.

He advances down the wicket looking to attack Philander, but the ball loops high in the air and it's taken well by Elgar over his shoulder in the covers.

It really wasn't the smartest shot selection from Buttler. Does he now just have one more innings to save his Test career?

The only thing stopping England from getting to 400 is someone not getting a century. Three or four have got in, then got out. These two can still take them to 400, which would be a good score on this series.

I mean, Freddie is a host of Top Gear, surely we can get him some better wheels?

Anrich Nortje has been the real deal so far today, bowling quick and with some aggression. Woakes resists the temptation to play at one outside his off stump but then looks a bit awkward as he tries to flick off his hip but fails to connect.

He does play the final ball nicely, though, clipping it through midwicket for a boundary.

Vernon Philander, playing his final Test, starts after lunch with this new-ish ball and bowls full to Buttler, who manages to squirt one down to deep point for a couple.

This partnership between Buttler and Woakes is now worth 34.

  15. England win at U19 World Cuppublished at 11:20 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2020

England are finally off the mark in the Under-19 World Cup. They have just thrashed Nigeria by eight wickets in their final group game, bowling the minnows out for 58 and chasing a meagre target in only 11 overs.

Beaten by West Indies and Australia in their opening two matches, England can no longer win the World Cup but they go into the plate chase to decide which teams finish between ninth and 16th.

Here's the scorecard from today's game in Kimberley. George Hill and Hamidullah Qadri took four wickets apiece for England before Sam Young completed the job with an unbeaten 39.
