The new ball to be delivered by a mole popping out of a molehill next to the square leg umpire.

That reminds me of the time a parachutist descended into a boxing ring to temporarily halt a fight between Riddick Bowe and Evander Holyfield.

Maybe sky divers could be used to drop in the new ball.

Plenty of excitement at the start of lunch as five sky divers land on the ground at the Wanderers much to the delight of the Saturday crowd.

    I'm liking it, David.

Any other suggestions on how we should celebrate the new ball being taken?

Why isn't the new ball taken with more ceremony? I would have it brought out on a silver tray by an entourage of butlers and footmen ... maybe accompanied by a troupe of circus acrobats.

    Cheers Matt.

A top start from Root and Pope this morning before that collapse/wobble/whatever you want to call it. Anrich Nortje has been superb for the hosts.

All eyes will be on how Buttler, in desperate need of runs, plays after he's scoffed his lunchtime sarnies. I reckon he's an egg and cress type fella.

I don't know what South Africa were doing to start with, banging it in. You have to bowl really full on a pitch like this. That helps the ball swing too.

There were 108 runs and three wickets in that session in just under 28 overs. It has been pretty even. Anrich Nortje dragged South Africa back into it with a great spell of fast bowling.

I don't agree with Zak Crawley. This is a 350 surface, possibly even more. We have seen lovely shots, but you have to get in. Root was loose, he walked off kicking his bat. It's a quick outfield, the ball goes fast at this altitude. England still have work to do. South Africa are very much in this game.

Four more. This is a proper edge off the bat of Jos Buttler. Faf du Plessis is applauding his bowler. Buttler just about survives until lunch. That has been another great session of cricket.

  14. Eng 295-7published at 81.3 overs

A thick edge from Chris Woakes goes down to third man for four. The new ball is leaking runs.

Beuran Hendricks is sharing the new ball. Vernon Philander has bowled three overs today...

  16. Eng 291-7published at 81 overs

Dwaine Pretorius won't get the second new ball many more times for South Africa if he bowls much more like this. Woakes gets a freebie of a leg-stump half volley first up and punishes him.

The South Africa team masseuse might have to get to work on Anrich Nortje over lunch.

  17. Eng 286-7published at 80.3 overs

South Africa take the new ball three balls into Dwaine Pretorius' over.

  18. Eng 284-7published at 80 overs

    Buttler 12, Woakes 7

Chris Woakes is a very good man to have at number nine but should be at number nine? Sam Curran has never scored a first-class or Test hundred. Woakes has 10, one of which was at Test level. Woakes averages 34.24 in first-class cricket. Curran averages 28.74.
