The England fielders have their hands on their heads as Dean Elgar nearly gifts England a wicket before tea.

Chris Woakes bowls full and wide to the left-hander who has a little waft. He wasn't too far from nicking it as Buttler gathers behind the stumps.

And with that, it's tea. South Africa see off what could have been a tricky period.

Mark Wood's unbeaten 35, including three sixes, helped England to that 400 mark.

And now he looks to impact the game with the ball as he comes in for Stuart Broad. A rather uneventful over, a single each for Malan and Elgar.

Back to Johnnie Jackson, he does sound like he could be pretty decent behind the stumps.

Johnnie Jackson, sounds like a real showbiz name that. It's also the name of a former Charlton Athletic midfielder.

Some lovely stuff by Chris Woakes as he tempts Malan to have a little flirt outside the off stump. Much like Curran, he is getting the ball nip off the seam and shape away.

Stuart Broad continues as Elgar dabs to Joe Denly at point.

South Africa go for the single as a one-handed pick up by and shy at the stumps by Denly misses

Malan would have been in, but the home side definitely don't want a run out now.

A change in bowling as Chris Woakes comes on for Sam Curran.

Woakes, looking well groomed, sporting a freshly trimmed beard, begins with a tidy maiden.

Malan and Elgar looking to just play this out until tea.

You may have heard some wonderful singing in the background when Aggers reports from Johannesburg. A section of the Unity Stand just below our reporter position is made up of a large group of friends from Johannesburg who join together to sing on a Saturday at the Test. There’s a healthy crowd in today at The Wanderers of over 13,000 with South Africa fans outnumbering England supporters comfortably.

That was a strange old England innings to watch to be fair. Wickets always fell in clusters. And when they did, there were reasons to be negative. But let's not forget about the Sibley/Crawley, Root/Pope and Woakes/Wood partnerships. Plenty to smile about.

I find it quite amusing that we post 400 and people are saying negative things. It's a good score on any wicket.

Sam Curran is definitely the pick of England's opening bowlers this morning as he finds more movement off the turf. Credit to Elgar and Malan, who seem to deal with the swing a bit better this over.

Half an hour until tea. Not too much happening at The Wanderers as my mind wanders to what I'll eat for lunch.

I wonder, rather than loosening him up, that ininngs has tired Broad a bit. This is a steady start by South Africa.

Malan is looking a little uncomfortable against Curran. Maybe that's slightly unfair, but he's certainly not looking overly solid as Curran continues to bowl full, straight and with lots of shape. It's been an impressive start by the 21-year-old, who is searching for his 10th wicket in this series.

What a story that is. And it is some innings by Billy the trumpeter. He'll be looking for an England win to sign off with.

Two maidens in two for Broad. A watchful start from South Africa.

It is not just Vernon Philander who is retiring at the end of this game.

Billy Cooper, the Barmy Army trumpeter, has announced he’s bowing out. I’ll be talking to Billy during the tea interval - he explains that having a young family and a wife who works full-time is making it more and more difficult to spend long times away on tour.

Billy is a classically trained trumpeter and before he headed out to South Africa he was playing in the Nutcracker at the Coliseum in London. He is playing at the Royal Opera House in March and is a regular in the acclaimed RSC production of Matilda.

This is his 16th year as a regular with the Barmy Army. The Cape Town Test was his 50th abroad, but only the 14th victory he’d witnessed.

And it all started by chance. In 2004 he was following England on tour in the West Indies and left his trumpet in a taxi in Barbados. It was later discovered by someone from the Barmy Army who asked him to prove it was his by playing it. Cooper played the Great Escape and became a firm Barmy favourite from then on.

South Africa off the mark with a couple of single but very encouraging signs for England as Curran gets his first delivery to shape back into the right-handed Malan.

Then another beauty from Curran, this time Malan plays inside the line as the ball shapes away.

Curran has the South African batsman thinking.
