  1. dropped catch

Elgar dropped on 8published at 17 overs

Is this a drop by Jos Buttler? Maybe. Just.

Elgar inside edges the ball off Wood and it is dying on Buttler as he dives to his right low down. It has basically yorked him but I think the England wicketkeeper just got a finger there before it hit the turf.

Buttler is not having the best of days.

  2. SA 22-0published at 16.3 overs

The pressure has been building on Pieter 'Richard Gere' Malan with the opener still in single figures despite facing more than 50 balls. He is hit again on the chest by a short ball for Wood as he drops his hands and takes the punishment of a good, accurate delivery.

A ball later Malan slashes hard over the slips.

  3. SA 17-0published at 16 overs

At first when I read that from Ian I thought 'absolutely no way' but... now I look at it you might be on to something.

Chris Woakes rips two great deliveries which leap off a length past Elgar with the South African writhing away from the ball like he's been electrocuted. Well left.

  5. SA 17-0published at 15.2 overs

Runs! Four of them. This South African crowd has been starved of things to cheer but there's a big roar when Elgar gets a boundary off Woakes.

It's not a great shot in truth from the opener. If England had a gully in replace he may well have caught it.

The difference between Stokes and Rabada is that Rabada had points that accumulated. He kept making mistakes and crossing the line, the offences added up and he missed the Test match.

    Elgar 4, Malan 9

That's that then. Stokes will be a few pounds worse off but he won't miss any matches. The correct call for me from the ICC.

Mark Wood is a clever bowler who is always trying different things. He runs in as normal but jumps wide of the crease at the last minute to change the angle. Malan comes forward but is beaten.

Overall, it's a testing over from Wood with another ball cannoning into Malan's ribs.

The Stokes punishment is what we expected - the basic, lowest punishment that could have been given. He was provoked, he did apologise and admitted the offence. So no need for a formal hearing.

  9. Stokes fined for fan altercationpublished at 14:09 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2020
    Breaking

England all-rounder Ben Stokes has been fined 15% of his match fee and given one demerit point for his altercation with a fan on day one.

The 28-year-old used expletives towards someone as he made his way off the field after being dismissed for two.

I think Chris Woakes could be bowling another six inches fuller but what do I know? The South Africa openers play out another maiden from the bearded Woakes.

I think England have bowled well, they have got it fuller than South Africa did.

South Africa know they will have to bat well in the first 25-30 overs but England will be really happy.

  12. SA 13-0published at 13 overs

    Trail by 387

Ollie Pope is in under the lid with Mark Wood charging in bowling up at 93mph by the end of the over. South Africa are still very watchful. They are going to have to really dig in.

The players are refreshed and back out there. Mark Wood is stood at the top of his very long run-up.

They may not have found that early breakthrough they were looking for but, after the exceptional hitting by Mark Woods and Stuart Broad, England will be happy with that session.
