England are doing what they have to do. It was always going to be like this. How long are they going to go on for? I reckon another 150. I think half an hour before lunch tomorrow.

That's yer lot. Let's be honest, it's not riveting cricket, but it's a means to an ends. England are going to win this series.

If Pieter Malan is bowling balls like this, maybe he should have been on ages ago. It completely rolls, Joe Root only saved by the fact it's not on the stumps. The England skipper, however, will not mind seeing that given the lead his side holds.

Dane Paterson flicks his wrist at the last second which helps him get that bit of seam movement. He does get the ball to talk.
There are songs coming from the stands as Paterson shuffles in. I think he's getting a hint of reverse swing. Whatever it is, the ball is certainly moving.I reckon there's one over to go before tea...

Pieter Malan has taken 20 first-class wickets. But he does have a five-for playing for Western Province against Eastern Province in 2017.
Sound the part-time bowler klaxon. South Africa are miles behind, Vernon Philander is off the field, so Pieter Malan is asked to bowl some medium pace. It's tidy enough, 72mph, but there's a reason why he's a part-timer. Temba Bavuma fancies a go too. He's wheeling his arms around.

Playing Test cricket at the highest level is different to first-class cricket.
You need to give guys the time. Yes, at the age of 34, Denly has less time and you could question his inclusion in the first place. But the selectors have made that decision so you've got to give him a chance. Because he is playing well and has looked fluent.
For me, Denly being 34 is not problem. I think too much can be made of age.
A little while ago, TV showed some replays of Joe Denly's dismissals throughout the series. A number of them have come through the gate between bat and pad. Something to work on. Another Dane Paterson maiden. South Africa are miles behind, but they at least have some control at the moment.

Root is aware that Du Plessis needs Pretorius to do a holding job, so he moves around in his crease in a bid to make the bowler err. It's an interesting battle, one that the skipper isn't entirely on top of. An inside edge says as much. Apart from that, it's all a bit sleepy out there.

It was a desperate review that one.
Eng 80-2
Review gone. The ball flicked Sibley's back leg, rather than the bat. They didn't check the leg before decision, mind...
Eng 80-2
No bat....

Have South Africa got another? Dane Paterson appealing against Dom Sibley?
Inside edge through to De Kock?
They want another look...

This the seventh over of Dwaine Pretorius' spell. Faf du Plessis needs that sort of shift from his bowlers, especially with Vernon Philander off the field and no frontline spinner to call on. When Pretorius errs, Root flicks very fine for a boundary to get off the mark.

Vernon Philander update from South Africa...
"Vernon felt discomfort in his right hamstring while bowling his second over. The medical team has evaluated him and are concerned about a right hamstring strain. He has been sent for a scan. An update will follow later."
