There's an idea - reverse the batting order.

We said yesterday that Jos Buttler may well be saving his Test career in the second innings. Well, there's a very good chance he won't bat again.

Woakes goes in full and Pretorius drives well to long-off for four. A clip down to fine leg then brings up the 100 for South Africa. And some ironic cheers by The Wanderers crowd.

Carlito: Mop up the tail, then send in Wood and Broad to add a quickfire 100 more to the lead.

Just before that wicket, the England fans were belting out 'Jerusalem,' led by Billy Cooper, the Barmy Army's retiring trumpeter.

Joe Root acknowledged the end of the song with a nod and a clap of the hands.

Dwaine Pretorius is the new man in.

Mark Wood continues as Quinton de Kock, who batted reasonably well (all things considered) last night, sees out the over. A maiden.

    Philander c Broad b Woakes 4 (SA 93-7)

That didn't take long. Chris Woakes with a pretty ordinary delivery down the leg side and Vernon Philander is way too early in his shot, the ball scoops up to mid-off and Broad takes an easy grab.

South Africa's nightmare with the bat continues into day three.

We know the game is up. South Africa know the game is up. It's just whether England go with plan A or plan B.

Without getting too ahead of ourselves, should Joe Root enforce the follow-on if and when the time comes?

We're only on day three, remember. Plenty of time left.

Those fans who are coming here wearing their South African shirts will be expecting to see some resistance today. But yesterday they looked like they were beaten. They had an awful day.

  12. The highlight of yesterday?published at 07:53 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2020

Maybe it’s Mark Wood (35*) and Stuart Broad (43) with their 82-run last-wicket partnership as they smashed the ball to all parts of The Wanderers.

Let’s not forget Chris Woakes’ contribution of 32 as the England tail wagged. Ollie Pope (56) continued to show us why he is the real deal, with captain Joe Root scoring 59.

Then the South African top and middle order crumbled like a shortbread as the England seamers did their part; a wicket each for Stokes, Woakes and Curran.

But the man of the day was no doubt Wood. Not only for his batting but for the three superb wickets he picked up as steamed in with some fierce pace.

Is there even a slight hope of South Africa fighting their way back into the final Test on day three?

    No, probably not.

They resume on 88-6, still trailing England by 312 runs.
