    Eng lead by 324

Hendricks, and a bit of uneven bounce, cause Joe Root all kinds of problems as the England skipper manages to just get his bat down in time to one which keeps low.

Root is then fortunate not to play on, an inside edge narrowly missing the leg stump and racing through to the fine-leg boundary for four.

I keep looking back at that painting (see 1:49 GMT entry) - I'm convinced Jonny Bairstow is a time traveller.

Si Lomas: Heard it here first, Ben Stokes to make the fastest Test century by an Englishman in this innings.

  3. Eng 101-3published at 13:52 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2020

Ben Stokes is on one with back-to-back boundaries.

The first one, he advances down the wicket and clips an off-side ball through mid-wicket.

The second, through mid-wicket again, but this time he goes aerial. Two bounces and four.

And with that England reach 100.

Ben Stokes is the new man in and is off the mark with a single to point, meaning he'll keep the strike for the next over.

That was Hendricks' second wicket in Test cricket. He hasn't had the easiest of debuts.

It’s not a very good shot, a bit lazy. He didn’t try to get his weight over it and just plopped it straight to mid-wicket. It’s very disappointing when you have done all the hard work.

    Sibley c Malan b Hendricks 44 (Eng 92-3)

Dom Sibley departs and he's fuming with himself.

Beuran Hendricks bowls on leg and the England opener tamely chips it up to mid-wicket, Malan with a smart catch to his right.

Sibley shakes his head and swings his bat in anger as he walks off.

No doubt which is the most lively section of the crowd this afternoon. The band is playing and the crowd are dancing just under the giant TV screen. The predicament of South Africa hasn’t dampened the spirits of these fans.

The amount of times we've heard about Root not converting his half-centuries. It is a valid point, mind you.

Just a scattering of fans dotted around The Wanderers, the crowd hasn't really picked up today. There is a pocket of noise coming from one particular section of home fans.

But the Barmy Army have been quieter than usual. I'm sure that will change once the pace of this game picks up a little.

Two slips and a gully as Sibley faces a fresh over Dwaine Pretorius. The opener moves across his wicket and pushes through mid-off for three runs.

Jamie Harris: Perfect chance for Root to get himself a big score here. Not that he necessarily needs it, but it would lift some of the pressure he appears to be under.

    Lead by 304 runs

There's still no Vernon Philander, who is having a scan on his hamstring. Could we have seen the last of him in Test cricket?

Beuran Hendricks begins. Sibley pulls away at the last second after a bloke behind the bowler's arm won't stop fidgeting about.

A clip to midwicket brings the first run after tea before Root wafts at a wide one.

Are England really "in need" of getting quick runs, though? It may not be the most enthralling of cricket but they're firmly in the driving seat, seat belt on, steering towards a series victory.

The players are back out in the middle.

So then, today has pretty much panned out how we expected.

South Africa offer little resistance with the bat, aside from the De Kock and Pretorius partnership.

Root resists the temptation to enforce the follow-on.

England lose a couple of wickets but are well on their way to completely batting South Africa out of this game.

These are easy games just to get through. I hope Root is more positive than that. I hope he plays this as a game they have to win.
