Beth Mooney then took over, anchoring the innings with 78 not out from 54 balls, and despite a late clatter of wickets, they set an imposing target of 185 for India to chase...

Injured Australia all-rounder Ellyse Perry on TMS: "It's been a pretty phenomenal day, one to savour, I don't think we could have scripted it any better. I've had the most amazing ride for a very long time, it didn't go my way this summer but the outcome the team accomplished was phenomenal, it was great to be a part of it."

Australia seamer Delissa Kimmince on TMS: "The medal's going straight to the pool room, with the others I've got. The support all round Australia has been incredible. I last played here in 2008 and there were maybe 20 people here - 12 years on, to get 86,000 was incredible."

Australia captain Meg Lanning on TMS: "It's all been worth it to get here - I was a bit sceptical of getting 90,000 to the G, there was pressure and expectation, but the second half of the tournament has been exceptional for us."

Is it true that you're going to go on stage and sing with Katy Perry? "We've put in a request, we're waiting to hear back!"

Australia seamer Megan Schutt on TMS: "This is absolutely insane. They said they wanted to fill the G, and they've gone and done it. I even got a bit distracted, I was counting how many times the Mexican wave went round! I was nervous in terms of I wanted the game to start, but as soon as I got here, I was fine - Alyssa Healy batted them out of the game. Big players step up in big games, and she's done that.

"We knew as soon as we lost to India, every game was a knockout game, but we thrive on that pressure and it makes it better at the end. It's been a rollercoaster."

Don't forget, Australia were nine minutes away from having that semi-final against South Africa abandoned, and they'd have gone out.

I was right by the dugouts as the final wickets fell - there were tears among the Indians for an opportunity missed, but you can tell how much it means to the Australians. The pressure on them was immense, every time they saw the hashtag #FillTheMCG there was pressure, and they're going to have the night of their lives. They came so close to being knocked out, but to win the tournament in the manner they've had was the cherry on top of an enormous cake.

As Meg alluded to, it's not quite been a world record attendance for a standalone women's sport event, as had been hoped - but what an effort, with a final declared attendance of 86,174.

What an achievement on International Women's Day.

Australia captain Meg Lanning: "I'm really proud of this group of players - we've had everything thrown at us, we've had our ups and downs and scraped through the tournament but it was our best performance on the biggest stage. After we lost that first game, there was a lot of expectation on us and a lot of tough times, but we stuck together and we had each other's backs throughout."

On the injuries to Tayla Vlaeminck and Ellyse Perry: "They were a big part of our plans, they've been amazing and the brave faces they've put on have been really special. They're very much a part of this. Having 86,000 people at the MCG, I never thought we'd see that - it's been an amazing tournament and I'd like to thank the fans."

  19. Captain's viewpublished at 10:34 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2020

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur: "The way we played in the group games was outstanding, I still have a lot of faith in our team, we need to focus on the areas - particularly the fielding as it was disappointing we dropped those catches. We need to keep trusting ourselves, and I trust this team."

Were there any nerves? "It is part of the game, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose - the first game was outstanding for us and gave us a lot of confidence. We need to keep working hard and stay together. We are on the right line, every year we are improving and we need to focus well in the crucial games - hopefully the forthcoming years will bring us a lot of glory. The upcoming [IPL challenge] tournament is very important for us."
