If West Indies get a few quick wickets, they can still roll England for under 300. Jason will be very important tomorrow for inspiration and inspiration alone. We need to see more with the ball.

West Indies have been below the standards they reached in the first Test today. There was a dropped catch, a lot of wayward bowling and some more scruffy fielding.

They'll want to improve tomorrow. The match isn't gone yet by any means but if England go big tomorrow it could be hard for the tourists to win the match.

I've been fascinated with the day's play. It's been a day's play I would see in the 80s. This is what I believe it should be played like. In the first innings, if you've been given the chance, you can bat in a boring fashion, or a fashion that can, at times, look like it could put people to sleep, but that's fine. You do what you can to put the opposition under pressure.

  5. Archer made a 'bad judgement call'published at 19:42 British Summer Time 16 July 2020

On Jofra Archer breaking protocol: "He went home. The integrity of this environment is very important.

"He has made a mistake. He's a young man and he's made a bad judgement call. He knows he's done that and we'll support him the best we can. He's got five days in a hotel room now."

West Indies need someone like Dom Sibley but with the ball. It's not going to look pretty all the time. Sometimes you just need someone to run in and do the hard yards. To me it looks as though the bodies aren't quite holding up as well as they thought they would.

  7. England 'in a great position'published at 19:39 British Summer Time 16 July 2020

England coach Chris Silverwood on Sky Sports: "Dom concentrates very well. He's willing to bat for long periods of time - and that's what we needed at the top.

"Those partnerships have put us in a great position. We've got to back it up tomorrow."

On leaving James Anderson out: "He was fine. He can understand what we're trying to do."

Ben Stokes has also batted maturely for another half century. He just looks such a good batter these days.

  9. 'I prefer this England'published at 19:38 British Summer Time 16 July 2020

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

You only have to go back a year or two ago and we were criticising England for being too flamboyant and the mentality not being right. This is completely the other end of the spectrum - and I prefer this end.

Dom Sibley is a young player England have to stick with. He's clearly very stubborn, he clearly has the mentality to bat for long periods of time. He's given himself a great platform to get a daddy hundred.

It hasn't always been pretty but all credit has to go to Dom Sibley. He has batted throughout the day, scoring 86 runs from 253 balls.

He'll be eyeing a second Test hundred tomorrow.

When you're put into bat under gloomy Manchester skies and end the day only three wickets down you've got to be pleased.

It was slow-going at times but England shouldn't care.

That's a tired-looking West Indies team that is trooping off. They've put some pretty hard yards in there.

  14. Close of play- Eng 207-3published at 19:30 British Summer Time 16 July 2020

And that is that. Jason Holder ends the day bent over halfway down the pitch after a lovely delivery that beat Stokes' edge. Stokes smiles as if to appreciate the bowling.

England will be happy with their day.

Stokes really is playing for the close. He hasn't played a shot in anger for half an hour at least.

The sun is threatening to come out for the first time today with five minutes left.

    Sibley 84, Stokes 59

Sibley's just plodding along now and looks comfortable. It feels like an age ago that Archer news broke. It has been a loooong day. I think West Indies are feeling it now too. The new ball is available but do they fancy it with their weary legs?
