James Whetlor: If you’re criticising @DomSibley for today’s batting performance, you don’t understand Test cricket.

Ian Blyth: Tell me again, how many runs do batsmen get for artistic impression?

  2. Eng 130-3published at 56.4 overs

Holder tells another fielder to get into the slips after beating Sibley's edge. That was one of the best deliveries we have seen today.

There were just six boundaries in the first 50 overs. That is the fewest boundaries in the first innings in England since 1999.

Olly Monk: Why are people moaning about Sibley? He is a proper old fashioned Test match opener, he isn’t going to be scoring at a strike rate of 90-100 but he will help grind bowlers into the dirt.

Josh Wentworth: Would love to see Sibley get a hundred here. Nothing more important than that first Test century in English conditions.

Roston Chase switches to round the wicket and in this over Sibley is able to nudge a couple of singles into the deep. Better.

England have gone nowhere after tea really. It's one of those days and conditions sadly where you can't really go after the bowling because you will lose wickets.

Holder has already got Stokes out twice in the series, remember. He probes away again but Stokes clips a couple.

Joe Root watches on with his Alice band back on. "Barbers are open," says Michael Holding on Sky. Hint, hint.

Dominic Sibley might not be the hero we want, but he is the hero we oh-so-badly need; the moaners would do well to cast their minds back to the days of Jennings & Roy.

Here's a change of bowling with Jason Holder bringing himself on. No sign of Shannon Gabriel in the attack since that apparent injury earlier.

I'm not too surprised. He chased after a ball like Dave from your local club a couple of overs ago.

There might have been a run there but the problem with where Ben Stokes is, there are so many people on the leg side, you can't actually see the angle. I think he'd have been ok but it wasn't the most elegant dive I've ever seen!

Don't run yourself out now! Sibley sets off before being sent back by Stokes.

Had the throw been better Sibbers could have been in trouble.

Dom Sibley played at the ball more in the channel in that over, after getting 50, than in the 160 balls before that. He seems very calm and no matter what the situation he's going to bat in his way and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

We'd all like to see a few more shots but Dom Sibley is doing a fantastic job for England. It's been a difficult day for batting.

  15. Eng 124-3published at 52.1 overs

A four to Dom Sibley! He may not have many shots but one of the ones he does have in the bag is the clip off the pads.

It's not been pretty but Dom Sibley has stood firm and is building partnerships despite how slow it is.

Sibley seems to be splitting opinion. Can he improve? Yes. Is he doing a decent job currently? Also, yes.

A single takes him to 50 for the second innings in a row. It has come from 164 balls.

I know the talk is about occupying the crease but Sibley takes it to another level. He is slower and a bigger bore than Alistair Cook. Even Sir Cook had a couple of scoring shots!

Sam Curran is on the England balcony wrapped up in a jumper with his hood up. You'd think it was May not a balmy Manchester afternoon.

A couple to Sibley off the back foot.

  20. Eng 114-3published at 50.3 overs

Shannon Gabriel is back in the field after going off with an injury concern earlier. That's good to see. He's even going through a few stretches which suggests he may even have a bowl shortly.
