It's easy to forget that Joe Root scored 556 runs in last summer's World Cup triumph - the most of any England player.

Let's not get on the 'drop Joe Root' bandwagon just yet.

I genuinely celebrated Root losing his wicket there - now we might finally get some runs on the board. About 10 overs too late. Loads of pressure on Buttler now just because Mr Protect-His-Average lasted so long.

Morgan has got himself in and is now ready to strike.

  4. Eng 99-3published at 24 overs

That's lovely from Eoin Morgan. It's all in the wrists as he lifts one over extra cover and away for another boundary.

He's up to 27 off 38 balls now. He's starting to look much better.

Joe Root hasn't scored a half-century in his past nine ODI innings, tying his longest run without a fifty. He does have a 49 not out in there.

Rewarding first over for Adam Zampa then.

Looking back at a replay of that Joe Root dismissal, he just doesn't get to the pitch of the ball and a little bit of spin means it draws the edge.

Zampa is having a good tour after taking four wickets on Friday.

That was a perfect delivery, slightly fuller and angled in towards off stump. Root was looking to drive through the covers, but there was turn off the surface.

    Root c Finch b Zampa 39 (Eng 90-3)

And he strikes with his third ball!

Sigh. This partnership was just starting to look good for England and they'd picked up three off the first couple of deliveries but Adam Zampa throws one a bit fuller, and Joe Root, looking to drive, can't quite get underneath it and an edge squirts to Aaron Finch at slip.

It's a good catch from the Aussie skipper is that.

As expected we've seen the last of Marcus Stoinis, certainly for the time being anyway, as Adam Zampa comes into the attack.

    His barnet is terrible.

John Hetherington: Are Marsh and Stoinis the bowling partnership with the largest ever bicep size? Units.

  11. Eng 87-2published at 22 overs

The positive intent is starting to become a bit more fruitful for England as Eoin Morgan plinks a drive over cover for three more.

Joe Root has faced 53 dot balls in his 71-ball innings so far. He's one of the best manipulators of the ball in the game so that either means he is in terrible nick or this pitch isn't as easy as we perhaps thought. I would edge with the latter.

Simon R: If these boys manage to stay for the duration, they should get up to a solid 150 anyway!

Peter: Could one of these two lob one up in the air so Jos can come on and get us some runs? Please?

Root has battled hard and found it tough. Maybe this is the start of something.

  14. 6 runs

Eng 82-2published at 14:42 British Summer Time 13 September 2020

    Root 36, Morgan 16

Beautiful from Joe Root. That may be the best of shot of the day so far as he just leans on a drive and the balls races away to the cover fence.

Shot! Root has had enough here. He takes a step down the track and crunches Marcus Stoinis over deep mid-wicket for the first six of the day. That brought up the fifty partnership off 86 balls too.

Stoinis' two overs have cost 20. That's much better from England's perspective but that may be the last we see of the all-rounder.

Joe Root's 23 from 60 balls is the slowest an England batsman has scored in an ODI since 2010.

If you take the misfields out of it, I'm not sure England would have got to 60. I wonder if there are more gremlins in this pitch than we know.

  17. Eng 69-2published at 20 overs

Five runs - three off the bat with a wide and leg bye - come off Mitchell Marsh's fourth over.

They've only cost Australia 13 runs so far.

England are deeply in a bunker here. I haven't seen them struggle this much in an one-day game for a long, long time.

That was hit like a rocket, low and hard. It looked as if he would get it with his left hand. It was always going away from him.

  20. Eng 64-2published at 19 overs

Oooh! A much-needed boundary for Eoin Morgan and England but it's slightly fortuitous.

With Marcus Stoinis more around the 80mph mark Morgan takes on the shorter ball but he doesn't connect all that cleanly and it just evades the diving Cummins at deep square leg before bouncing just before the sponge.

Morgan picks up another couple with a steer down to the third man to end the over.
