I've been so impressed with Pakistan's game awareness. Shan Masood, in particular, has grown in confidence. He hasn't missed out on his pads and he played the short ball well. There's a lot to like about his batting. They've put England under huge pressure and Joe Root, as captain, is under the cosh to try and bring it back.

If you went by this session alone, you'd think it was Pakistan who had played three Tests already this summer and England were the ones without any real game time.

Three from Woakes' over. Drinks are brought on. England need to regroup.

  4. Eng 261-5published at 90 overs

Shan Masood 111, Shadab Khan 40

Shadab Khan's crisp white shirt is no longer crisp. Nor white. All that diving about for the quick singles has left a muddy mark which will take a good few washes.

Shadab shows his intent by twice dancing down the wicket to Bess but unable to pull the trigger, before a punch off the back foot brings him a single.

Poor in the field from England as they allow Shadab Khan to take one more with a drive to mid-on.

I'm surprised England haven't gone to the short stuff. We saw the short ball theory against West Indies. The orthodox stuff hasn't worked this afternoon.

  6. Pak 259-5published at 89 overs

Chris Woakes starts off with a tidy, tight line but then strays towards the leg side and Shan Masood clips it to past square leg for a couple. Three from the over in total.

The new ball is nine overs old and it looks like Joe Root might give Dom Bess a go? The spinner seems to be warming up. No Archer?

You have to go back to 2012 to find an instance of England conceding more than 257 in the first innings of a home Test and going on to win the match.

The new ball has done little for Broad and Anderson and it looks like Joe Root will try something different. Chris Woakes comes into the attack.

Jimmy is chuntering. He's not happy.

  10. Pak 256-5published at 88 overs

Shan Masood 108, Shadab Khan 38

I have lost count of the amount of times England have had a shy at the stumps and/or Pakistan have taken a hit and run single. The tourists have taken the initiative here.

A cover drive for four just adds to James Anderson's frustration and grimace.

Here is another Masood stat... he is averaging 203 in 2020. Remarkable.

Shan Masood is the fifth Pakistan opener to score a centuy in England. Saeed Anwar was the most recent in 1996.

It's three centuries in three consecutive innings for Masood. A man in form.

Nearly the breakthrough for England, though. Stuart Broad bangs it in short, there's a top edge by Shadab and the ball, which seems to hang in the air for an age, falls just short of Jofra Archer at fine leg.

So what do England do here? How different would things be if Mr Stokes could bowl?

Shan has played the anchor role absolutely perfectly for Pakistan.

Shan Masood's century came from 251 balls, with 13 fours. It's his fourth career Test hundred.

The Pakistan team really got behind their man then as they lined up on the balcony and applauded and celebrated Masood's innings.

All the talk at the start of yesterday's innings was Masood's past struggles in England and against James Anderson in particular. He'll have silenced some of those critics.

You can hear the roar from the Pakistan dressing room beneath us. That is three consecutive hundreds for Shan Masood. He had to work so hard for the first 50 runs and he has flourished of late. He has really frustrated England.

    Pak 244-5

A clip off the pads and there it is, the first century of this series!

A brilliant, hard-working innings from Shan Masood. He rode his luck yesterday but he has been solid today. His partners have come and gone but he's been ever present for Pakistan. Well played.

The second new ball is travelling. It's not doing a lot.

  19. Pak 241-5published at 85 overs

Shan Masood 98, Shadab Khan 33

The new ball brings either quick runs or quick wickets. Unfortunately for England, it's the former as Shan Masood crunches Broad off the back foot and through point for four.

And another boundary! This time Masood guides it down to third man and moves two runs shy of his century.

Jimmy's just had a proper chuckle after being hit for four after Jofra Archer said something to him. I don't think I've ever seen that happen before. Jofra's played a blinder!
