There have been 23 dot balls since Dom Sibley hit a four.

    Root 26, Sibley 34

Yasir Shah continues to target the rough outside the leg stump but Dom Sibley is up for the contest. The England opener cleverly makes sure to have bat and gloves well out the way, take a good stride and allow the ball to deflect off his pad. He can't let concentration levels drop here.

A clip to mid-wicket and some good running adds two more to the total, bringing up the 50 partnership for England.

That has exploded off the pitch. It was well played by Root.

  4. Eng 70-1published at 31 overs

Oh, hello! a bit of uneven bounce as Abbas has one jumping up sharp off the turf and hitting the shoulder of Joe Root's bat.

The England captain ends up playing that with one hand. It took him by surprise.

England are going along nicely, helped by the fact the ball is behaving itself. At the moment, the Law of Boycott still applies. Stick two wickets on the score and things look much tougher. How many would you want England's last five wickets to have to contribute? 80-90? Pakistan will probably get a dip with a second new ball, too.

I'm pretty sure Raheem didn't Photoshop that himself. They have people to do that for them, right?

Yasir Shah goes round the wicket to the right-handed Dom Sibley who is happy to kick and pad away. There is so much time left in this match. England need to bat sensibly, not lose any wickets and just keep things ticking along.

Cricket fever has also hit England and Manchester City's Raheem Sterling. He scored his 100th club goal for City in their win over Real Madrid last night and celebrated his century with this Photoshop masterpiece...

I'm loving this discussion on whether the Pakistan fielders are too loud or not. Cricket, eh? There's always something to talk about.

Abbas is using the crease more, changing the angle of his deliveries and making the England batsmen think. Another maiden over. He just doesn't leak runs.

Nigel Tibbott: Is there any way to make the fielders shut up? I love the enthusiasm but my ears are sore.

Amrul Choudhury: If you cannot deal with banter and the opposition pressure then you really should not be playing Test Match cricket. Cricket is such a soft sport.

Close! So close! Abbas bowls full and finds the leading edge of Joe Root's bat, the ball falls just short of backward point.

Sibley opened the face of the bat. He did that off the quicker bowler before lunch. He is playing that drive nicely.

That's nice from Dom Sibley who opens the face and guides Yasir Shah down to the third man boundary for four, playing with the spin. More of those will do very nicely for England.

Pakistan's other leg-spinner, Shadab Khan, will have a big part to play in this innings.

Zahra: To "Jim from Bucks" who's so concerned about Pakistan "being too noisy"- either mute the game or stop watching. I'd rather the Pakistan team bring atmosphere to a game without the fans than play in silence.

  15. Eng 66-1published at 14:01 British Summer Time 8 August 2020

There is nothing new about Pakistan fielders making noise. If you think this is loud, you'll be in for a shock if you ever listen back to their former wicketkeeper Moin Khan. Those screeching sounds are etched in my memory.

A couple of singles off Mohammad Abbas and England seem to have settled down a bit now.

Why are people complaining about Pakistan making noise? England love chirping and moaning. Stop complaining and enjoy the game.

How much of that was down to the appealing from Pakistan? They ask the question with such conviction and enthusiasm. Like it or not, they're a very entertaining side to watch.

Just a single from Yasir Shah's over.

Tom: That is one of the worst umpiring decisions you’ll ever see! It took him so long to consider it too! But a lot more turn now for Yasir Shah so pressure on the batsmen and the umpires.

Root has played two lovely shots since lunch. He may have left that on another day but he has to take those chances.

England need 213 more runs to win

Mohammad Abbas offers up some width and Joe Root is onto it like a flash, cutting it for four.

Boundaries, spin, reviews. It's all happening out there after lunch. But normal service resumes as Abbas tightens up his line.

Mohammad Rizwan is standing up to the stumps. I've been so impressed with his wicketkeeping.
