The ball Sibley was given out to was a serious delivery.

Sibley reviewed immediately. He has missed it by miles.

    Eng 59-1

Ultra Edge shows no bat involved. Decision overtuened, there was daylight between bat and ball. But oh my, there was some big spin there. Sibley survives.

  4. Umpire reviewpublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 8 August 2020

Sibley caught behind. Umpire takes an age to put his finger up. England review straight away.

  5. Eng 59-1published at 23.3 overs

Oof, that was close to hitting the off stump. Yasir Shah gives it some flight and Sibley leaves a straight one. Inches from being bowled. A good leave, if we're being kind.

That was the perfect answer to a little bit of chirping.

  7. Eng 59-1published at 23 overs

    Sibley 26, Root 18

That's the ticket for Joe Root, he takes a couple of steps down the pitch and clips it through mid-wicket for four. Concentration needed here for England, no silly post-lunch mistakes.

    It was a beautiful ball.

  9. Eng 59-1published at 22.4 overs

Stunning delivery, seam wobbling around as Root plays inside the line and there's a big appeal for caught behind. I'm not sure I heard a noise and nor is Pakistan Azhar Ali as he decides not to review.

  10. Eng 55-1published at 22.1 overs

Abbas doesn't give you many freebies. But it's defended solidly off the front foot by Joe Root.

Mohammad Abbas is changing ends. He has bowled all of his overs from the other end.

Can you imagine the amount of Test wickets Mohammad Abbas would have if he played for England? Lethal in these conditions. He will kick things off with the ball after lunch.

It is a terrific cricket match. When the target is below 300 you only need two players to come off. In this morning's session there wasn't vicious movement. There was the odd ball but wasn't anything utterly alarming that would send shudders through a dressing room.

Right, just a couple of minutes away from the afternoon session as Joe Root and Dom Sibley follow the Pakistan team onto the field.

Huge couple of hours or so this.

Hotpot day at Emirates Old Trafford, which has been a highlight in each of three Tests here. As a side I went for the braised cabbage, which seemed to include bits of apple. Is that a thing?

  16. Bairstow out cheaply in Bob Willis Trophypublished at 13:37 British Summer Time 8 August 2020

Elsewhere, professional cricket is taking place across the country today as counties take part in the Bob Willis Trophy.

And the morning has belonged to the bowlers with wickets falling all over the place.

Jonny Bairstow missed out on a chance to impress the England Test selectors, going for just 5 with Yorkshire reeling at 67-4 against Nottinghamshire.

Former England captain Sir Alastair Cook is unbeaten on 33 with Essex on 65-3 against Surrey and Sussex are 91-3 against Kent at Canterbury.

I'm sitting here feeling relatively confident, I must say. I did say last night that they had an opportunity and that the top order wouldn't get blown away. I'm happy to see they have had a positive start. Sibley and Root have played the spin very well and rotated the strike.

So England will head back out after lunch at 55-1, still needing 222 runs for an unlikely win. The stage is set for Joe Root to (incoming cricketing cliche) ... play a captain’s innings…

Abbas will be the one to bowl a lot of overs and keep the rate down. He's a real threat.

But Mohammad Abbas showed what a class bowler he is by dismissing Burns for 10.

Having failed with his attempted review, Burns walked off and shared a few words with the vocal and jubilant Pakistan team…
