It wasn't a difficult one at third slip. That won't amuse Broad very much. It was Sibley's catch but Burns might have said he could have got that.

  2. dropped catch

Abid dropped on 1published at 4 overs

    Pak 7-1

Stuart Broad is going to be ticking.

England have had to change ther slip cordon with Ben Stokes not being available. Joe Root is at first slip as usual with Rory Burns and Dom Sibley at second and third respectively.

Broad draws a thick edge from Abid Ali and Sibley comes across Burns and the ball cannons off the thick part of his hand just under the thumb and flies away.

It was a difficult height, around head height, but was that Sibley's catch?

    dukkhaboy: Oh Jimmy Jimmy.

Greg Double: Glorious wicket for Jimmy Anderson. (Assist: Vaughan.).

  5. Pak 6-1published at 3 overs

James Anderson has got Shan Masood out seven times now. The left-hander averages just 4.85 against the England great.

Pakistan captain Azhar Ali is the new man. He's under a little bit of pressure. He sees out the rest of the over but England are targeting his pads already.

A classic dismissal for an outswing bowler to a left-handed batsman. A great breakthrough for England because they know what his concentration can be like.

Shan lbw Anderson 1 (Pak 6-1)

    Got him!

After a strangled appeal first ball, James Anderson is bang on the money second ball and gets his man.

There's a tiny bit of inward movement and Shan Masood is wrapped on the knee roll. That was cannoning into middle stump and it doesn't get much more plumb than that.

  9. Pak 6-0published at 2 overs

Excellent, accurate start from Stuart Broad.

There's a little bit of nip there too as he beats the edge of Abid Ali. There seems to be good carry in this pitch too, with Jos Buttler taking that at chest height, slightly off his feet.

Leaving Archer out is a surprise. He is fit and firing and probably had a point to prove.

It’s hot, really hot, at the ground. It feels humid too so it’ll be no surprise to see the ball swing.

  12. Pak 6-0published at 1 over

There's no signs of any extravagant movement in the first over as Abid Ali joins his fellow opener in getting off the mark. Albeit in slightly fortuitous fashion as he attempts to leave, but ends up glancing it through gully.

  13. Pak 1-0published at 0.1 overs

Shan Masood gets off the mark first ball as a leading edge runs into the off side.

This is what happened last week - let's hope we get something as thrilling this week.

James Anderson is going to take the new ball. It's humid, can he get the ball to swing?

Down there at ground level there is not a breath of wind so it's going to be hard work for the bowlers. It's absolutely boiling heat.

Pakistan, on the other hand, are not enjoying themselves on the road.

Defeat at Old Trafford last week means they have lost their past seven away Tests.

They need to halt that run at the Ageas Bowl this week if they are to have any chance of winning or drawing this series.

After a pretty disappointing Ashes series and tour to New Zealand England have found a winning formula under Joe Root in recent times.

He's won his last six Tests as captain (three in South Africa, two v West Indies and the first Test last week), with England's only defeat in recent times when Ben Stokes deputised for Root in the first Test against West Indies.

The run is Root's best since he became captain in 2017.

I would expect swing and movement and you look at Jimmy Anderson. He didn't bowl badly at Old Trafford, he just sets ridiculously high standards.

  20. What's the forecast?published at 10:50 British Summer Time 13 August 2020

England and Pakistan could be doing more than playing against each other this week. It looks like they are going to be in a battle with the weather too unfortunately.

    Here's today's forecast...

It seems a matter of when rather than if the latest thunder/lightning show hits the Ageas Bowl.

The problem is, the weather is pretty much like that all Test.

At times it's predicted as just light rain so hopefully any disruptions won't set us back too much and we can get a result.
