That was a genuine edge, it wasn't controlled. It might have been a low catch for a fourth slip.

  2. Pak 78-1published at 30 overs

    Abid 49, Azhar 20

Another edge from Abid at Broad but it goes wide of the three-man slip cordon and away for another boundary.

    Andy Zaltzman
    Test Match Special statistician

It's been a couple of years since Azhar Ali had good form in Test cricket. Since the start of a British Isles tour in 2018 when Pakistan played a Test against Ireland and two against England he's averaged 26 in 18 Tests including this one. Prior to that in his 27 Tests he'd averaged 57.

    Abid 43, Azhar 20

Not allowed to use saliva now of course, but Anderson is using plenty of sweat to keep a shine on the ball. Rock solid defence from Azhar though.

    Air conditioning

The TMS box might be the only place in the country that is ruing air conditioning today.

It is freezing and the temperature can’t be changed.

We’ve had to take action and tape up the vent.

  7. Pak 71-1published at 28 overs

    Run-rate 2.54

Excellent line from Broad, firing them in around 85mph and almost trapping Azhar lbw on middle stump with one that angled in, before the bat came down at the last moment. A good contest under the lights.

You just get the feeling that if England can just locate an edge or take a catch then there might be two or three knocking around in quick succession here.

  9. Pak 71-1published at 27 overs

    Abid 42, Azhar 20

Another thick edge from Abid but the defensive push is all along the ground and brings him another four off Anderson, who has 1-19 from nine overs.

    Abid 38, Azhar 20

Just to compound matters, Abid gets a thick edge along the ground and it squeezes through gully to the boundary.

That's an interesting one. There was quite a lot of squiggles on ultra-edge, including once the ball had gone past the outside edge.

That's a lovely swinging delivery. There was nothing from Jimmy Anderson at all. The delivery was almost too good.

  17. Pak 62-1published at 25 overs

Floodlights on as Jimmy Anderson charges in, sending them down around 85mph. Three slips are waiting to atone but nothing on offer as Anderson returns a third maiden. England consider an appeal for caught behind as one moves away from the bat, but decide against.

Pakistan will be very happy about what they achieved in that morning session. On another day they could easily have been 50-4. The ball has done something.

Stuart Broad, who saw Abid dropped off his bowling in the fourth over, will resume after lunch in humid, overcast conditions to complete the over interrupted by the weather.

daddycool: England are pretty average at slip catching. Always have been. And incidentally, can we stop all this "surprise" when Ben Stokes drops one. He has always been a 70-75%er. A few worldie catches here and there does not change this.
