Rob Stow: Root is still a quality batsman but his stats since the last Ashes down under are 2122 runs in 32 Tests at 37.89 (4 hundreds, 12 fifties). Solid, better than our other batsmen bar Stokes, but definitely not world-class.
Jos Buttler gives himself some room, rocks back and drills Yasir Shah it through extra cover for a boundary. The England vice-captain is now on 20 from 32 balls.
Buttler has played Yasir well. Here's how he got off the mark earlier...

Peaky: Root once again fails, having made a fluent 30-40odd. The first four years of his career, he was pretty much England's only reliable source of runs. He's been unable to score runs for such a long time now that it can't just be called a lack of form.
Crawley 85, Buttler 16
This is Crawley's highest Test score and he is now just 15 runs away from his first century in international cricket.

That's the angle of the left-armer, going across you as a right-hander. He had to reach for it.
Zak Crawley rides his luck as he completely mistimes a pull shot off Shaheen Afridi, the top edge ballooning up and falling safely between mid-off and mid-wicket.

You've got to look to play Yasir Shah from the front foot - and if you have to play him off the back, make sure it's with a straight bat.
Plenty of flight from Yasir Shah and Zak Crawley steers it down to the wide long-on boundary. Shaheen Afridi, with the chase, comes up short. He seemed to do himself a bit of damage and he bends down to drag the ball back, looking rather awkward as he comes back up and stretches his back.
And then Jos Buttler is in on the act, with a wristy drive which finds the gap on the off side and races through another four.
Good over for England, nine from it.

Shaheen has impressed me. The ball hasn't been zipping around and there's not been a huge amount of swing, but he's bowled that tight, off stump line to the right handers. He's adapted to the wicket. He's hanging it out there and trying to make the batsen come to him.
Crawley 78, Buttler 12
Oh wow, Dave has gone there with the hashtag and everything.
Back-to-back maidens as Shaheen bowls a tidy over. He's bowled well today.

Dave Amitri: With the Root situation there's a clear solution, Jos Buttler is playing every game so make him captain. Free Joe Root to just bat. #FreeJoeRoot
Eng 150-4
Yep, as expected. It was a case of 'let's be safe rather than sorry'. It was bat first, so no lbw. And it hit the turf before being taken by Rizwan, so no catch. It was an umpire review so neither team lose a review. As we were.

Mohammad Rizwan hasn't got a clue. He's shrugging his shoulders!
Eng 150-4
Yasir Shah is always smiling. Maybe because a lot of the time he is taking wickets and causing England problems.
Yasir has Crawley on the back foot, the ball is hit into the pads, then the ground and up into Mohammad Rizwan's gloves. The umpires send it upstairs. I'm not quite sure why.

This is now Zak Crawley's highest Test score.
Crawley 78, Buttler 12
Shaheen Afridi comes back into the attack.
The Joe Root debate will continue throughout the day, I imagine, but let's take a moment to appreciate what an innings this is from Zak Crawley.
The England number pushes Shaheen through cover for a couple more to bring up the 150.
This lunch-time analysis by Michael Vaughan underlines what a good player Crawley is...

Can we see Joe Root batting stats when captain and when not captain?
Jim
You certainly can, Jim - he averages 42 as captain and 53 when not in charge.
I think it's fair to say that England do not like batting against Yasir Shah. Zak Crawley looks to play a sweep to the leg-spinner, the ball deflects off the bottom edge of the bat and deflects into his pads.
Three from the over. About 40 minutes until tea.
