Saint Alastair: Fantastic knock from Crawley, he looks a prospect. England please don’t muck around forcing him up the order. Like the idea of him at 3, Root at 4, Stokes at 5 and Pope at 6. Strikes me as a decent middle order.

  2. Eng 508-5published at 139 overs

I think umpire Michael Gough may have had a word with Asad Shafiq about bowling down the leg side, with the Pakistani straightening up his line. It is in the umpire's power to warn the bowler if he deems it to be negative bowling.

Chris Woakes adds another single as England's mammoth first innings score increases.

  3. Eng 505-5published at 138.1 overs

Asad Shafiq's line to the England batsman is, ahem, fairly negative - trying to stop them scoring by firing it down the leg side.

This is England's first score of 500 since August 2017 in the day-night Test against West Indies at Edgbaston.

  6. Eng 503-5published at 138 overs

    Woakes 15, Buttler 141

Short from Shaheen and Woakes swats it back past the bowler for another boundary. That's 12 from the over, the 500 is up and England and Woakes are on the charge.

  7. Eng 499-5published at 137.5 overs

Joe Root is pacing up and down on the balcony. He ends up in the eye-line of match referee Chris Broad, who politely requests the England captain move out of his way. Smiles all round.

A half-volley to Chris Woakes who dispatches Shaheen to the boundary for four more.

What impressed me about Crawley is how greedy for runs he was. I like greedy.

I liked the way Crawley was so unflustered - he'll have to play innings like that in the sub-Continent this winter.

  10. Eng 495-5published at 137.1 overs

    Woakes 7, Buttler 140

Chris Woakes takes a good stride forward and times Shaheen Afridi impeccably through cover for four.

What is so pleasing about these two big scores is that this is a top grade bowling attack. This has really been an excellent show of skill but also of those old-fashioned virtues of hard work and application. A great lesson for any young aspiring cricketers out there.

    Eng 491-5

It was a fine take by Rizwan but no replays show that no bat was involved. Not the best of reviews but I think Pakistan can be forgiven having spent so long out there.

  13. Pakistan reviewpublished at 136.3 overs

    Eng 491-5

Buttler, looking to guide it down to fine leg, misses out with Rizwan taking it behind the stumps. Pakistan appeal, given not out. I think it might be pad rather than bat.

Peter Watson: Zak Crawley, with 48.41, now has the highest average in the England team – higher than Root's 47.99.

I agree. Mind you, there hasn't been so much of that magic in this Test. But it was nice to see the way they congratulated Crawley when he was dismissed.

So then, how will England go about this? I'm predicting some fireworks from Buttler.

Asad Shafiq will continue, Woakes is on strike.

Humblebrag: The Pakistan cricket team have always been my favourite non-English sports team. Always manage to be equally competitive and gentleman-like. Always have that bit of magic but never boring like the Aussies.
