It is pouring down. It's really heavy and certainly persistent. The woods behind the ground have vanished into a dank gloom.

Pak 41-0
With the rain, bad light and no prospect of play any time soon, lunch has been taken.

Smashing down.
Frustratingly, we probably could have had 30 minutes more play had they started at 10:30 BST.
But the decision to start at 11:00 BST was made during last night's evening session after the officials looked at today's weather forecast.

Ruth Brooksbank: Re Jimmy Anderson haircuts, that dabble with platinum blond was a nightmare, whereas his current quiff is the haircut of dreams.
It's been Pakistan's morning so far. England have been sloppy...

Mohammad Rizwan was bullish last night. He said something quite outrageous - he suggested Pakistan's first target will be 310 to kill the deficit, score 150 on top of that and then bowl England out. He said that with no sense of irony, he genuinely believed it.

Aaaand there it is. Not only is there bad light but it's started raining too.

It's a really dark cloud! It looks like something from Lord of the Rings...

This is now the second longest opening partnership in England by a visiting opening pair in 30 Tests. The longest is 18.4 overs by India's Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul in 2018.
Shan pushes into the off side and sets off for a quick single but is wisely sent back by his partner. Pakistan will need to bat sensibly and bat for a long time if they are to draw this Test.
Just one from Woakes' over.
The fourth umpire is lurking by the boundary with the pink light meter in his hand.

Masood 13, Abid 21
Masood and Abi have been running between the wicket well this morning, as they take another sneaky single down to mid-wicket.
Archer beats the edge with a full delivery as Masood looks to drive.
Someone has put a penny in the slot, the floodlights are now on.

The groundstaff have pushed back the advertising boards to allow access to the covers. A cameraman has pulled out a poncho. If there were fans here, they would be pulling coats on.

The groundstaff are getting twitchy now.
Urgh, that cloud does not look good.
Abid is struck on the pads by Chris Woakes. There's a halfhearted appeal from Joe Root and his men. TV replays show it was too high. And too wide.
Four from the over. Not much happening out there.
If you're just joining us, this has been the story of the morning, another England drop...

Charles Wright: England now seriously missing Ben Stokes, a player who can make things happen. Curran rather than Bess may have been a better call?
