Could be said for a few players but Billings would have played so much more white-ball cricket for England in a different era.

Boundaries on either side of the wicket for Billings off Campher, sweetly struck again. Lots of strokeplayers in this England set-up and 15 fours and a six in this innings thus far.

I'm trying to take the Olympian view, now that we've just had this real great Test series and it was made by West Indies winning the first game really. If that happened here, it would add a bit of spice to it wouldn't it?

  4. Eng 100-4published at 19 overs

    Target 173

Exquisite reverse sweep from Billings at Singh, perfectly executed and placed with military precision between the fielders. As if to prove his expertise, he repeats the stroke and collects four more, before pinching the bowling with a single off the final ball to move to 23 and bring up the England 100.

There's much that's surreal about this occasion but one of the things is nothing to do the pandemic. It's the fact that the floodlights are blaring out and there's no suggestion of dusk or any clouds.

  6. Eng 90-4published at 18 overs

    Target 173

Ireland packing the off-side field for Morgan, who has seven from 16 balls. Campher setting his own fields and enjoying the combat. Ireland were 72-5 at the same point.

Lots of people looking forward to seeing Banton today but only one boundary for the youngster before he fell for 11 in the 14th over.

Morgan biding his time against the wily Singh, the captain can press the accelerator at will of course. Two overs for five for the bearded spinner and the players take drinks.

Mark Burt: The frustrating thing is, with Stokes, Buttler Root and Hales (still exiled) out of this team, Vince, as a very gifted senior player, had a opportunity to stake a claim. The way he blew it won’t be lost on Morgan who is as ruthless as they come.

  10. Eng 84-4published at 16 overs

Shadows beginning to lengthen at the Ageas Bowl but still plenty of warm evening sunshine as the bustling Campher sends down another economical over. Ireland a bowler down remember after McCarthy went off in the opening over.

    England v Ireland
  13. Eng 83-4published at 15 overs

    Target 173

More spin from the delightfully named Simi Singh, who has 18 wickets from his 18 matches and a best of 3-15. A very swiftly bowled opening over - no danger of being behind the rate here -and accurate too.

Ireland will have a sniff here, they are not out of the game. This could have been a case of England reaching 80-0 and the game just petering out but the start Ireland have made means they are definitely going to make a game of it.

  15. Eng 82-4published at 14 overs

    Target 173

Captain Morgan for England now and he's away first ball with a confident square drive. Campher sending them down at 84mph.

Let's be candid, I was just grappling with my technology when you said it was up in the air. Was it a top-edged pull?

England are very good at chasing 270, pretty good at chasing 370 but not very good at chasing 170.

This match is starting to look remarkably similar to the match between the sides in Dublin last year. That day England were chasing 199 but quickly lost five top-order wickets before Ben Foakes bailed them out with 61 not out.

  20. Eng 77-3published at 13 overs

    Target 173

Banton's first boundary and it's a sweetly timed sweep off McBrine to take the requirement under 100. Ireland were 48-5 at the same stage.
