Middlesex right-hander Martin Andersson departs leg before after Clarke gets him playing across his front pad.

Nick Gubbins still unbeaten at the other end on 116.

  2. Play to restart at Trent Bridgepublished at 16:41 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

    Nottinghamshire 209-7 Derbyshire

Thankfully it's only a short bout of rain at Trent Bridge.

We're told they'll be back under way at 16:46 BST. On the dot.

    George Garton

A combination of injuries coupled with inconsistent form when he has been fit, have hampered the progress of George Garton in the last two seasons.

Previously selected by the England Lions in 2017, and also by the Southern Brave for The Hundred, suggests that potential has not gone unnoticed, and his electric ground fielding makes him an asset in any format of the game.

As a left-arm quick bowler, Garton has the combination of pace, bounce, and variation of angle to unsettle top-order batsman, although a tendency to try and bowl too fast, has in the past led him to bowl too short. His batting potential has only just become apparent; Jason Gillespie promoted him with some success in the order last season, and was rewarded with successive first-class half-centuries at the end of last season.

Garton has the ability to be a genuine all-rounder; with David Wiese and Chris Jordan both unlikely to play in the competition, this is a golden opportunity to stake his claim for a regular berth in the Sussex side.

  4. Ones to watch: Hampshirepublished at 16:40 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

    Joe Weatherley

With the emphasis on the four-day game to start with, this could be an eye-catching period for young Joe Weatherley.

The 23 year-old batsman still has time on his side. An average of just 23 does not do justice to a man who has a very good technique, good organisation at the crease, and was beginning to show what a good player he could be, when a cruel injury (fractured ankle) struck him down half way through last season.

He's been slower than some to push through, but then again some of the best mature later.

Opening the batting requires huge mental strength and Joe was beginning to find a formula to be successful. His concentration levels are good, although like most, it lets him down at odd times.

Master that, which he appears to be doing, and plenty of runs will come.

  5. Hampshire start replypublished at 16:39 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

    Sussex 176 v Hampshire 2-0

After bowling out Sussex for just 176, it's time for Hampshire to start their reply and for us to take a look at a couple more "Ones to Watch" from our BBC local radio commentators....

  6. wicket

WICKETpublished at 16:38 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

    Dent b D'Oliveira 92 (Gloucestershire 205-3 v Worcestershire)

Chris Dent gets into the nineties but once again Brett D'Oliveira is on hand to grab a crucial wicket for Worcestershire.

Having broken Dent's partnership with Graeme van Buuren, D'Oliveira strikes again - bowling him for 92.

A steady knock off 184 balls and Gloucestershire are 205-3 as Ryan Higgins comes in.

  7. wicket

WICKETpublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

    Stevens c Browne b Porter 36 (Kent 253-5 v Essex)

Essex pick up another rare wicket since the first 30 minutes or so of play.

Darren Stevens departs in very understated fashion for 36 off 51 balls as he mistimes a drive out to Nick Browne at point.

For a while, it looked like there was some doubt it was a legitimate catch from the bump ball, but given nonetheless.

Another useful partnership for Kent worth 80 as Heino Kuhn (110 not out) plods on at the other end.

  8. rain stops play

Rain stops play at Trent Bridgepublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

    Nottinghamshire 209-7 v Derbyshire

A sharp shower on the banks of the River Trent at tea has meant an unexpected delay to play....

50 for George Gartonpublished at 16:23 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

    Sussex 176 v Hampshire

Sussex have been dismissed for just 176 at Hove, but before they were, there was a half-century for tail-ender George Garton.

An entertaining and perhaps crucial landmark came off 101 balls with four fours and two sixes.

Hampshire's bowlers though do a fine job to bowl out their hosts, three wickets apiece for debutant seamer Ajeet Dale (3-20) and leg-spinner Mason Crane (3-23).

And another century brought up - this time for Middlesex's Nick Gubbins!

It's come off 178 balls with 14 fours and that's just his second first-class century in the past three seasons for the left-hander.

Good way to make an impression at the start of this campaign.

First century of this Bob Willis Trophy goes to Kent's Heino Kuhn.

It's come off 167 balls with his 14th four as he glances Sam Cook off his legs for a couple - the second run coming from some very sloppy Essex fielding with an overthrow.

Here we go then for the last session of this opening day...

    Durham 74-6 v Yorkshire

It's been Yorkshire Day in more ways than one.

Despite Durham choosing to bat, the visitors have been on top here at Chester-le-Street.

They have taken full advantage of the overcast conditions and the ball has been seaming around. It may be 1 August, but it has all of the hallmarks of early April when it comes to the batting.

Jordan Thompson and Ben Coad have taken two wickets each, but it's been a team affair and The Tykes have put pressure on in bundles.

Gareth Harte will resume on 21 after tea, but he has nearly double what anyone else has managed so far.

At least at 74 runs, Durham have equalled their previous lowest score against Yorkshire, which was set in 1998. But in these strange, Covid-19 times, maybe we shouldn't rush to judge?

For the record County Durham day is in March. It certainly isn't today!

    Essex v Kent 220-4

An afternoon session which belonged to Kent.

Essex got the breakthrough by removing Ollie Robinson after a fourth wicket stand of 150 with Heino Kuhn.

Kuhn has gone on to 97 not out at tea and is looking like an immovable object.

The South African is yet to score a first-class century for Kent.

The Essex bowling has probed by has looked a bit flat at times. Matt Quinn has bowled well but without reward.

  15. England in command in second ODIpublished at 15:50 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

    England v Ireland 87-5 (25.3)

Meanwhile there's also action at the Ageas Bowl where England are taking on Ireland in the second one-day international of the three-match series.

The hosts bowling first again and seemingly in control with regular breakthroughs.

James Vince even got his first ever international wicket as Ireland skipper Andrew Balbirnie clipped an attempted leave to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.

The Red Rose have ticked along nicely after a tricky start against Worcestershire.

  19. Glamorgan enjoying prolific spellpublished at 15:33 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

The first innings to be completed is at Edgbaston and it's not pretty reading for Northants despite a late flurry.

Luke Procter and Ben Sanderson added 49 for the ninth wicket but once the latter fell lbw to Alex Thomson, Warwickshire didn't take long to finish things off.

Four wickets for Olly Stone and one for Tim Bresnan on his Bears debut.
