Your tributes to Dean Jones #bbccricket

David Wallace: Have just read with sorrow about the death of Dean Jones. I did not know him at all, but I once received a jocular tweet from him after BBC live text published a tweet of mine about him breaking windows at Sussex's Hove ground. Commiserations to his family & friends.

And this once again raises a bit of a debate we had yesterday about the future of county red-ball cricket.

What do you think should be changed moving into next season and beyond?

And don't forget to post your tributes to Dean Jones, who sadly died at the age of 59 earlier today.

Ravi Bopara also suggested on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra that they limit each innings in the County Championship to 100 overs. Darren does not agree...

Darren Hopkinson: If people want to watch limited-overs cricket, there is plenty available for them nowadays. I understand why the rule was introduced this season, but please let's not make it permanent.

  5. rain stops play

Weather update (of sorts!)published at 14:09 British Summer Time 24 September 2020

Somerset 255-5 - rain stopped play

    Lord'sImage source, BBC Sport

It did briefly stop raining out there and by brief, I mean for probably a minute before restarting.

The ground staff have rolled out all the covers and now decided to retreat to the shelter below the Tavern Stand.

This looks set in for a while.

  6. 'The pitch is much better today'published at 14:02 British Summer Time 24 September 2020

    Somerset 255-5 v Essex - rain delay

    Ravi Bopara
Former Essex and England all-rounder on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

The pitch is very different to yesterday, obviously the bowlers are a little bit more tired coming back today.

The opening bowlers who have been the biggest threat have bowled a lot of overs so they are not gonna keep the potency throughout their bowling spells.

The ball is getting older, it may have got damp yesterday and got soft but the pitch does look a lot better then yesterday.

  7. rain stops play

    Somerset 255-5

This is quite a heavy shower.

May not last that long, but will take a while to mop up once it passes.

Full square covers have been hauled on.

    And we're off!

Paul Walter completes another over from the Nursery End, which costs five runs, before the rain comes down all of a sudden.

No hesitation from both sets of players as they go sprinting off the field.

  9. 'Should be highlighted how well Somerset have played'published at 13:48 British Summer Time 24 September 2020

    Ravi Bopara
Former Essex and England all-rounder on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

We need to highlight how well Somerset have played because the conditions have favoured Essex throughout the day and a half that we have had.

We had all the rain yesterday and the lights on and off, that's one of the worst things as a batsman.

  10. Postpublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 24 September 2020

Umpires Rob Bailey and Russell Warren have a long look at their light meters.

Meanwhile, something that sounds very much like a rumble of thunder breaks out in the distance.

I don't think it will be long until we're off here.

  11. Somerset 250-5published at 13:45 British Summer Time 24 September 2020

Simon Harmer comes round the wicket to the right-handed Craig Overton and beats his outside edge from the second ball of the over.

A second maiden in a row for Essex as the light continues to fade over Lord's.

An Essex and England legend shows us all the importance of regularly sanitising our hands in this day and age.

Graham Gooch is in the ground today, watching down from the Allen Stand, at the place where he played one of his most significant innings 30 years ago.

His 333 and second-innings 123 in a Test match against India in 1990 are probably the first thing that got me hooked on cricket.

I reckon he'd probably fancy making a few on this pitch too today the way the runs are flowing for Somerset at the moment.

  13. Somerset 250-5published at 13:41 British Summer Time 24 September 2020

A maiden over there from Paul Walter as he starts a second spell of the innings after lunch.

Simon Harmer will return from the Pavilion End to replace Jamie Porter.

  14. Postpublished at 13:39 British Summer Time 24 September 2020

Floodlights are coming back on here and Paul Walter is replacing Sam Cook at the Nursery End....

  15. Somerset 250-5published at 13:37 British Summer Time 24 September 2020

    Byrom 105, Overton 58

Somerset bring up the 250, which normally would mean a second batting bonus point in a group game!

But, more significantly in this final, it could well be a par first-innings score based on what we've seen so far.

Essex only picked up six batting bonus points in the five group matches and passed 250 just twice in a first innings.

Their highest first-innings total was 298.

Remember - whoever gains a first-innings lead in this will be the winner in the event of a draw.

  16. Somerset 248-5published at 13:32 British Summer Time 24 September 2020

    Byrom 105, Overton 57

Craig Overton really trying to keep bossing Essex.

He takes a couple of big swings and misses off Sam Cook before pushing a single into the legside off the last ball.

That's 80 overs gone, but remember the new ball isn't available until after 90 overs in this competition.

  17. Somerset 245-3published at 13:29 British Summer Time 24 September 2020

    Byrom 105, Overton 54

Jamie Porter resumes from the Pavilion End after lunch for Essex.

He cuts a frustrated figure though as first Craig Overton tucks a couple of runs away and then Eddie Byrom survives top-edging a pull shot over the slips and safely away from the chasing Sir Alastair Cook.

Runs continuing to flow for Somerset.

  18. 'He's played beautifully'published at 13:28 British Summer Time 24 September 2020

    Ravi Bopara
Former Essex and England all-rounder on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

It's a brilliant innings from Eddie Byrom and what a stage to bring up your first 100 of the season.

He's played beautifully, it's not often to you score a chanceless 100 but it's been a fantastic show.

He's driven well and played straight which is one of the basics of batting.

There it is for Eddie Byrom!

A fantastic century brought up with another straight drive for four.

He reaches his third first-class century off 181 balls with his 15th four.

That's his first century in red-ball cricket since March 2019 against Cardiff MCCU and then a single off the last ball of Sam Cook's over also brings up the 100 partnership for the sixth wicket between him and Craig Overton (51 not out).
