    Thanks Gary.

They had the covers on the wicket throughout the interval as a precaution with the odd black cloud drifting across.

But pleased to say, they've just come off and the players are heading back out to start this afternoon session.

Essex in need of some wickets here, Eddie Byrom just three runs shy of a very impressive century.

Rich Bevan: Terrible news about Dean Jones' passing. Still remember now seeing him smash the ball to all parts of Edgbaston in a pre Ashes warm up game in 1989 as he scored a big double ton in a 350+ partnership with Tom Moody. R.I.P. Deano.

"I'm shocked, he was a friend to so many people and was an outstanding cricketer.

"I was in Trinidad when he played his first Test at the age of 22 not knowing then he would go on to such an illustrious career.

"I not only watched him, but I worked with him and he was outspoken which is what you liked about him and he was for a long, long while one of a key figures in Australian cricket.

"It's very sad at the age of 59 that he is no longer with us."

Simon Hutchins: My overriding memory of Dean Jones is of his 210 against India in a Test Match in Mumbai. Frequently vomiting and suffering, it is still the highest score by an Australian in a Test match in India. An epic innings. RIP

Somerset 233-5 v Essex - lunch, day two

    Vic Marks
Ex-England spinner on BBC Radio 5 live Sports Extra

It'll be hard work to get wickets out here if the sun stays out because those nics don't necessarily carry if you get them.

The ball hasn't spun, one or two spun yesterday but nothing has spun for Harmer so far, and he's bowled perfectly well.

It could be a very good slow burner of a game.

    Somerset 233-5 v Essex

    What a session for Somerset!

Eddie Byrom sees off Simon Harmer's final over before lunch and goes to the interval on 97. His stand with Craig Overton is worth 94.

I said earlier that Somerset might be happy with anything north of 250... 350 or more could be on the cards now.

    Somerset 232-5

Craig Overton nudges Sam Cook to the fine-leg rope and then brings up his half-century with a couple of singles.

It's taken 85 balls with nine boundaries. Along with his mate Eddie Byrom, they've put Somerset in the driving seat.

Can Eddie Byrom get to his century before lunch?

10 minutes, and probably three overs at the most, to go.

    Cricket Australia statement

Cricket Australia have just released a statement following the death of Dean Jones...

“Dean Jones was a hero to a generation of cricketers and will forever be remembered as a legend of this great game,” chairman Earl Eddings said.

"Anyone who watched cricket in the 1980s and 1990s will fondly recall his cavalier approach at the crease and the incredible energy and passion he brought to every game he played.

“Although many remember him for his brilliance in the 50-over game, arguably Jones’ finest moment in the national team came in scorching conditions in Chennai in 1986, where his selfless and courageous innings of 210 helped Australia to a famous tie against India.

“Jones remained an immensely popular figure in Australian and Victorian cricket throughout his life and was a much-loved columnist and commentator in every corner of the cricketing world.

“This is a truly sad day. Deano’s loss will be felt not just at home in Australia, but across the globe. Our thoughts and best wishes are with his wife Jane and daughters Isabella and Phoebe.”

    Byrom 95, C Overton 42

Somerset may be reining things in with just over 10 minutes to go until lunch.

Simon Harmer concedes a single off his 13th over - one that includes a big shout for lbw against Craig Overton. Looked to be spinning down leg.

  15. Somerset 221-5published at 12:25 British Summer Time 24 September 2020

    Byrom 94, C Overton 42

Essex have managed to slow the run scoring in the past couple of overs with Simon Harmer and Paul Walter conceding a single apiece.

The reigning county champions will be desperate for a wicket before lunch.

Joshua: Somerset comfortably on top at the moment. With their strong bowling attack, plus Essex having to bat last, anything above 250 will be a strong score for Somerset. Something which they're well on track for.

James Gooday: Somerset massively on top with that bowling attack. Don't know why everyone is saying it's tough to call...

Keric Morris: How much extra pressure do they all feel? With the weather variable (to say the least) over the next few days, if there is no result then ‘the county that leads on first innings, as long as there were two fully completed innings, would be deemed the winner’.

  19. Somerset 214-5published at 12:13 British Summer Time 24 September 2020

    Byrom 91, C Overton 38

More runs for Somerset... eight of them off Paul Walter's second over, including a really streaky boundary for Craig Overton.

The all-rounder went for a big drive but got an inside edge past the stumps.

Somerset have scored 95 in the session for the loss of just one wicket.

  20. 'Options are there for the batsmen'published at 12:10 British Summer Time 24 September 2020

    Ravi Bopara
Former Essex and England all-rounder on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

If it's a hot sunny day and a good wicket, as a batsman coming into this situation you wouldn't look to do anything silly, you would just say I'm here and I'm going to bat all day and tomorrow.

If it's a bit of a nibbly wicket and you know that scoring is tough then this is an opportunity you take, you'd think that they've got their second-string bowlers on now and these are the boys to take down and get that score up.
