  2. SA 158-4published at 18 overs

South Africa are now up to par on this ground. How many can they get?

Sweet Caroline is blaring out to an empty Newlands ground. In my head I can envisage Mark Wood absolutely belting that out in the England changing room or dugout.

    SA 156-4published at 17.4 overs

Effortless. I thought this was just going to go straight down the throat of an England fielder but Rassie van der Dussen has timed, and placed, that flick perfectly.

    He is a real talent.

Arjun Singh: I’m a huge fan of T Curran, but I think he’s been found out at this level, because he’s been so very expensive for a long time. It we’re playing Sam Curran, I think Wood is a better option than TC for sheer threat and pace along with Jofra.

  5. wicket

    Klassen c Buttler b S Curran 20 (SA 147-4)

Sam Curran finishes with a wicket.

Heinrich Klassen is surprised by the short ball and a thin edge goes tamely through to Jos Buttler behind the stumps.

Curran finishes with figures of 3-28 from four overs. A superb day for the all-rounder.

It's worth noting that we haven't seen Ben Stokes in action with the ball. He was bowling off a short run in the IPL, so he might have a couple of niggles and be saving himself for his efforts in the second innings with the bat.

  7. SA 143-3published at 16.2 overs

Hmmm. Sam Curran tries a wide yorker, and it's a tiny, tiny, tiny bit too full and Heinrich Klassen can turn it into a full toss and squirt it away behind point for four.

Sam Curran is going to bowl out. Can he finish off well?

  9. 6 runs

    SA 139-3published at 16 overs

Van der Dussen 21, Klassen 13

I was just writing 'it's a good over from Tom Curran as he goes for just six after going for 24 off his final over' but then he goes too full, right in the slot, and Rassie van der Dussen smacks an 87m six over long-on.

Curran purses his lips in frustration. It's not been his day.

Tom Curran, who has gone for 27 from his two overs, is back on.

Loose from Chris Jordan as he bowls two wides. South Africa manage to pick up four off the two extra balls - costly.

Heinrich Klassen looks a good player, though, as he plays a gorgeous back-foot drive through point before a similarly gorgeous front-foot drive.

A big job now for South Africa's middle order to press home the advantage given to them by Du Plessis and De Kock. Can they get to that 180 from here?

  14. SA 117-3published at 14.2 overs

There have been 10 day-night T20 internationals at Newlands. The team chasing have won seven of those games. England always prefer chasing, but I imagine that played a part in Eoin Morgan's thinking.

Chris Jordan is on to replace Adil Rashid.

How about this for the bucket list? This is Pukekura Park in New Plymouth, New Zealand, the home of Central Districts. I played there for Auckland Aces. They filmed the Tom Cruise film The Last Samurai there!

Nice change of pace from Sam Curran to end an excellent innings from Du Plessis. Now can South Africa’s middle order get to 180?

  17. SA 113-3published at 14 overs

Heinrich Klaasen joins Rassie van der Dussen in the middle.

Sam Curran has excellent figures of 2-20 from his three overs so far. He never lets England down.

There's the breakthrough England wanted. Sam Curran came round the wicket and cramped up Du Plessis. Going for another maximum, he found Jordan at deep square leg, and he doesn't drop them.

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 13.4 overs

    Du Plessis c Jordan b S Curran 58 (SA 110-3)

    Sam Curran just takes wickets.

And he gets good players out.

He's not the quickest anyway, but he's taking pace off the ball too and Faf du Plessis just tamely finds Chris Jordan on the square leg boundary. He's not going to drop that.

    Sam Curran replaces Jofra Archer.

Eoin Morgan wants to keep an over of Archer up his sleeve.
