Adil Rashid finishes with figures of 0-27 from his four overs. A tidy enough day out for the England leggie.

180 looks a competitive score. There's been some slow turn for Rashid. Moeen’s omission will be a talking point. With India hosting the T20 World Cup, I would choose to play the likely balance of the team you want there in as many games as possible before then.

  4. 6 runs

    SA 102-2published at 12.2 overs

Shot! Rassie van der Dussen was struggling, scoring just six off his first 11 deliveries but that will help.

He gets down on one knee and slog sweeps Adil Rashid over square leg for just the fourth six.

    Rashid is miffed by that.

  5. SA 96-2published at 12 overs

Jofra Archer can't deliver the wicket that Eoin Morgan wanted but he restricts South Africa to just six, so I imagine England will be happy with that.

The current run-rate would get South Africa up to 161. Would that be enough?

  6. 50 runs

50 for Du Plessispublished at 11.3 overs

That's a superb half-century for Faf du Plessis.

South Africa needed him to get a score after losing the early wicket of Temba Bavuma and he's done just that.

Eoin Morgan wants another breakthrough so he calls for Jofra Archer to bowl his third over.

His gold chains are looking sparkling today - he's given them a polish.

Patrick Brown: From the photos I've seen, the Adelaide Oval looks like a beautiful place - green area close by and the church in the background. Though I would give anything to visit St Lawrence, Canterbury as my parents live round the corner & my kids haven't seen them in almost a year.

Three singles end Adi Rashid's third over.

He's gone for 17 from his three overs so far.

  10. SA 87-2published at 10.3 overs

The average first innings total in a day-night game at the Newlands is 158. South Africa are on well on track for that, and they'd hope a fair bit more.

Adil Rashid's third over starts with two dots and a single.

Rassie van der Dussen is the new batsman for South Africa.

I rate his bloke - he averages 31.2 in T20s and 70 (!) in ODIs. He was South Africa's best player, by far, during the 2019 50-over World Cup.

England are starting to pull this slightly. South Africa were going at 10s a few overs ago, but the run rate is down to 8.6 now.

That was good bowling by Jordan. Round the wicket to the left-hander, back of a length. De Kock was looking to force it through the off side, but gave a comfortable catch to Morgan.

    Big breakthrough for England.

The South Africa captain has been chipping the ball a lot today, but he doesn't get this one quite right, as he spoons a catch, high off the bat, to Eoin Morgan at cover. It's a simple catch for the England skipper.

England will want to go on a role now.

Adil Rashid has been Eoin Morgan's go-to man in white-ball cricket for a number of years. Can he be the man to break this partnership?

  16. SA 78-1published at 9 overs

Du Plessis 41, De Kock 30

In this Covid-19 world both sides get two reviews per innings so I reckon Eoin Morgan just gambled there with it being Quinton de Kock. It wasn't a great review though.

South Africa are happy just milking Adil Rashid at the moment. They know he is England's dangerman.

Nope, no bat. On we go.

  18. England reviewpublished at 8.4 overs

Hmmm, England, well Eoin Morgan, think they may have Quinton de Kock caught behind here off Adil Rashid.

The spinner and Jos Buttler, behind the stumps, weren't really interested but Morgan thinks he heard a noise as De Kock swept at a googly.

  20. SA 71-1published at 8 overs

Eight off Chris Jordan's first over.

When these two sides met in three Twenty20s earlier in the year the lowest score was 176 so expect to see plenty of runs over the three matches this time round too.
