    Should have been taken!

Mark Wood the bowler, Joe Root diving to his right at first slip. He's taken a harder chance already today.

Adam Savoury: I know this Sri Lanka side isn't great, but how has Chris Woakes been sat around doing nothing for 18 months?!

Dushmantha Chameera is the new man. Sri Lanka have lost five wickets for 15 runs.

Fernando looked very uncomfortable there. He looked awkward, both feet off the floor and just tried to fend it off.

  5. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 36.1 overs

    B Fernando c Moeen b Willey 1 (SL 160-8)

    And the next one goes.

Binura Fernando's comic cameo is over. He gets into a tangle against a shorter one from David Willey, hopping around to help the ball to Moeen Ali at mid-wicket.

Grant: Bairstow just epitomised the game of cricket in the space of 5 seconds. I love this sport.

  7. SL 160-7published at 36 overs

There's been a lot of chat about chops today. The subject of triple-cooked chips came up earlier. If someone can explain, please do. How do you cook them three times?

The crowd are having a great time. Music, chips and cricket. What more could you want in life?

  9. SL 158-7published at 35 overs

There's more comedy running going on out there. Mickey Arthur has appeared on the boundary, arms folded, mouth open. He looks like he's about to give everyone detention.

It wasn't great cricket all round, really.

  11. Not outpublished at 34 overs

    SL 157-7

    Just home.

It's not a great throw from Liam Livingstone, but Bairstow still should have taken it over his head. At that point, both batsmen were at Bairstow's end. Then came the chase, turn and throw from Bairstow, but it was just too late.

If this is out, it's unreal.

    To sum up....

Both batsmen at the same end.

Throw comes in, high, through Jonny Bairstow's hands.

He hares after it, picks up, throws, and hits direct at the non-striker's end...

If Sri Lanka can just accumulate maybe four an over, just keep the scoreboard going. You don't want to be skittled out in 40 overs, but there's not much to be achieved from just digging in either.

You're there to watch the cricket, Matthew. Don't you worry about the football.

I was at the England v Australia game at Old Trafford in 2018 when Jos Buttler hit a brilliant, match-winning century in a tense game. That was the same day England beat Panama at the 2018 football World Cup and a decent number of the crowd went behind the stands to watch the game.

I don't think that's going to be an option today. The bars don't seem to have TV screens.

  16. SL 153-7published at 33 overs

What do Sri Lanka do here? Is it worth tickling it round for an hour to use up the 50, or do you have a thrash and hope it comes off?

Doug Waller: Looks as though Chris Woakes is making up for lost time having barely been allowed to play for ages! Maybe it’s just because he’s so fresh! Just shows the foolishness of having such a terrific talent not playing

Binura Fernando is the new man. That's now four wickets for seven runs...

That's a poor dismissal given the situation of the game, trying to play the pull shot in the air when there are two men on the leg side boundary.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 32.2 overs

    Perera c Billings b Willey 73 (SL 152-7)

    That might be all, folks.

Kusal Perera, Sri Lanka's last hope of something competitive, holes out to deep square leg.

A pull at David Willey could have been kept down. Instead, Perera goes aerial and Sam Billings makes a tricky catch look simple.
