It is quite a good surface this. There is something for the new ball bowlers, but this is not the sort of total that will win you a match.

    Thanks Ffion.

That was another rather unsatisfying effort from Sri Lanka. They just haven't been able to get going with the bat in this series.

  4. Postpublished at 14:55 British Summer Time 4 July 2021

It was probably quite a fitting end to Sri Lanka's tour with the bat, concluding with both batters at the same end.

Anyway, my stint here is over and it's time for Callum Matthews to take you through lunch and the first part of England's innings.

Shaun: This could be a 50/20 match and I'd still back England to win.

I think there was two there. Dasun Shanaka should have taken the gamble.

It is a horrible run out. It's always hilarious for a neutral.

There was two there, but because it was Sam Billings there was some doubt there.

  8. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 41.1 overs

Fernando run out Billings 0 (SL 166 all out)

    Oh that's not good.

Shanaka hit the ball out to midwicket and needed two to stay on strike. It's hard to tell who was even run out in the end and whose call it was, but either way both batters ended up at the bowler's end and that's never going to end well.

England will need 167 to win.

  9. SL 165-9published at 41 overs

    Shanaka 47, Asitha 0

Shanaka takes a single from the fifth ball and leaves Asitha Fernando to survive one from Rashid, which he does - just. It beats the outside edge and is met by an agonising gasp from Jonny Bairstow.

It is a powerful stroke that. He is effectively pulling the ball.

  11. 6 runs

    SL 164-9published at 40.4 overs

That's more like it! Bit short from Rashid and Shanaka clears his front leg and pulls it for a huge straight six! More, please.

Dasun Shanaka will go back with his head held high, and maybe with his reputation slightly enhanced. This is another plucky effort.

  13. SL 158-9published at 40 overs

    Shanaka 40, Asitha 0

Earlier on Test Match Special, Charles Dagnall said that he hoped the rain would blow over Bristol and make its way to Wales.

I can confirm that has happened, and it is hammering down. We've taken one for the team, it seems.

Meanwhile Shanaka gets a four off the fifth ball and scampers a quick single off the sixth to retain the strike, but Asitha would've been out had there been a direct hit.

  14. SL 153-9published at 39.3 overs

Shanaka turns down a single to the cover boundary. He then goes for a ramp to Sam Curran but misjudges it.

I think he's got a nasty blow on the chest there and he's called for the physio.

  15. SL 152-9published at 39 overs

    Shanaka 35, Asitha 0

Adil Rashid bamboozles number 11 Asitha Fernando with his googlies. The final ball strikes him on the pad, draws a big appeal but it's given not out. Eoin Morgan contemplates a review but it was probably going down leg.

Time for Shanaka to try and whack a few now?

What a superb piece of work by Jonny Bairstow.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 38.1 overs

Chameera st Bairstow b Rashid 16 (SL 152-9)

That is why Bairstow was so confident. Chameera's back foot was pretty much exactly on the line of the crease with nothing behind it.

    This is very, very close.

Jonny Bairstow is sure. He thinks this is out.

  20. Postpublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 4 July 2021

Chameera took a huge swing and a miss, Bairstow is buzzing and Michael Gough went upstairs immediately.
