It's been a rollercoaster Test match, this. Hopefully, it will be more of the same tomorrow. England lead by 27 runs, and I can tell you one thing - I wouldn't want to face James Anderson. He will be fired up after that peppering from Jasprit Bumrah.

Before we sign off, a reminder that you can watch highlights of today's play on Today at the Test on the BBC Red Button now - and at midnight on BBC Two.

However, there's some live cricket on BBC Two right now as Oval Invincibles face London spirit in The Hundred. You can follow a live text commentary of that game here...

    Until then, go well.

India are under pressure now. If they lose a couple of early wickets - so far it has been KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja who have scored most of the runs - they are under pressure.

The middle order is struggling and they have a long tail.

"There are not many superlatives left for Root, who is producing the sort of batting that few in the history of the English game have been capable of..." is the verdict of my colleague Stephan Shemilt, who has filed his take on the day's play from Lord's.

England have absolutely got to believe that they can put India under pressure tomorrow.

It was a wonderful day for batting. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow looked comfortable.

Mohammed Shami has been a bit of disappointment. He is one bowler who has the ability to bowl unplayable deliveries on the flattest of pitches, and he didn't bowl well enough today.

Jonny Bairstow, who made 57: "It's been a transition myself from The Hundred to Test cricket and it was pleasing to spend some time out in the middle and put on a hundred stand with Joe Root.

"Hopefully I can build on that, leading into the rest of the series, and make a big one.

"There's going to be periods where people change their plans to you - if they are coming shorter to you on a pitch like that you don't mind it. I got out to a ball that came out the pitch slower. I was through the shot and it caught the glove."

It is really about Joe Root. He is in an extraordinary run of form.

He seems to have mentally added an element to his game, where he has become really ruthless. He likes to bat at a good tempo but he seems able to do it for longer.

Jonny Bairstow on Sky Sports: "Obviously Joe Root will be feeling pretty good. What a day for him. To past 9,000 runs and score 180 not out at the home of cricket is an amazing achievement.

"Hopefully, we have enough runs on the board. We can come with fire in our bellies tomorrow. When Jimmy Anderson comes to bowl on Sunday, he'll be ready.

"I think we have seen a few balls that have gone underground. If we can bowl and have a good morning we'll see where we get to. The game is finely poised."

That is a terrific effort from England. Joe Root led the way and it was a fine innings.

You never know what you're going to get from this England batting line-up.

Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow like batting together. Jonny has spoken well, looked good at Trent Bridge, and they sort of bounce off each other.

That partnership was excellent. England desperately needed it.

Jasprit Bumrah went up to James Anderson as if to say 'sorry about that' and I suspect Anderson probably went 'thank you very much. I'll see you later'.

Joe Root got a slap on the back from some of the Indians. It was a wonderful, very well-controlled innings from the England captain.

Anderson b Shami 0 (Eng 391 all out)

Joe Root pokes a single off the fourth ball of Mohammed Shami's over. He leaves James Anderson two balls in the day to survive.

A no-ball first up, Anderson leaves a wide one alone, then...bowled. It was full and straight and beats the defence of Anderson.

Seven overs left in the day, but the clock is ticking round to 18:30 BST. Jasprit Bumrah out the attack after one no-ball too many. James Anderson might be a relieved man.
