That Mohammed Siraj maiden at Joe Root was the first they had bowled at him since the 58th over.

There had been 42 overs since that they had bowled the first ball of the over at him, so they had 42 chances since.

Mohammed Shami, who returns at the Nursery Ground End, fires one full in at Mark Wood's off stump but the Durham man digs it out. A ball later an expansive flashing drive from Wood. A glorious shot. Apart from the important part - hitting the ball.

I have to say I find these passages of play the least entertaining in Test cricket.

Jonny Bairstow, wearing some rather grubby-looking socks, has his feet perched on the white railings of England's balcony in the Lord's pavilion. His body language hints he's not expecting much of a gear change from Joe Root here. Possibly Mark Wood will try to support him, and they will eke out ones and twos.

A maiden from Mohammed Siraj to Joe Root.

It is a tricky decision for Joe Root to navigate the rest of this innings. Root isn't known for his big hitting though.

Mark Wood is definitely capable. It could affect Root's fluency too if he doesn't take the runs on offer.

I'd hazard guess England, and Joe Root in particular, might play some shots now. In a game of fine margins an extra 20 or 30 quick runs might be vital.

That was good bowling. It is a fair enough decision - it looked out.

It was reward for the bowler.

Robinson is struck on the pad by a full one by Siraj, who again bowled with a scrambled seam. This time it's given. Robinson wants another look.

Ollie Robinson can bat. He can provide Joe Root with some very valuable support here.

Ollie Robinson, collar turned up, is standing tall at the crease. He shows Mohammed Siraj the maker's name on his bat, then a ball later pulls his hands away from a delivery which climbed off the pitch.

There has been a hint of spin for Ravindra Jadeja in the last few overs that he has bowled. He is getting assistance from the slope too.

That was a gift for Joe Root. It was a controlled shot, he didn't try and hit it too hard. He's got a big smile on his face and I'm not surprised.

A full bunger from Ravindra Jadeja and it's dispatched by Joe Root down the ground with minimal fuss.
