Neil Worrall: How lucky we have been over the last few years to watch an England cricket team in a period of their 2 greatest bowlers and 2 greatest batsmen (statistically if nothing else).

Moeen Ali is the new batter by the way. He got a very good reception, almost a standing ovation, as he made his way to the middle.

He leaves and blocks his first four deliveries, after Joe Root takes a very quick single.

We were talking about Joe Root having not scored many straight down the ground but he has crunched that through the covers.

Oh, Joe Root. That is beautiful.

Mohammed Shami replaces Jasprit Bumrah and Root greets him with a gorgeous textbook cover drive to the boundary.

    Glorious.

Muted celebrations from India. They're not running around giving each other high fives. But that was a nice piece of bowling.

It was a perfect delivery from Ishant Sharam which is what you are trying to do from the Pavilion End at Lord's. Sometimes Jos Buttler doesn't get his feet moving, having a stand and deliver stance, and it's hit the top of off stump.

    Buttler b Ishant 23 (Eng 283-5)

    Top of off stump!

Jos Buttler looks to drive, and there is a bit of movement back in from Ishant Sharma, and the ball goes in between bat and pad and crashes into the top of off.

Buttler looks down at the pitch.

This game is so evenly poised. It is fantastic cricket.

I don't want to speak too soon but if England are still batting at the close tonight they are going to go past India and we are in for a cracking couple of days.

Michael Gough - who is just in his t-shirt, with the sun bathing Lord's at the moment - is speaking to Ishant Sharma about getting in the danger area again.

That is the second time he has spoke to him today, after speaking to him a couple of times yesterday. An official warning has to be coming soon.

That was a very strange moment. Jasprit Bumrah was like a crown green bowler there!

    Well, this is quite extraordinary.

Jasprit Bumrah is getting fed up here. He's ready at the end of his mark, but Joe Root isn't. The England skipper is scratching away at his mark - he doesn't want to throw this away lightly - and Bumrah just underarm rolls the ball towards Root.

Bumrah overstepped three times in that over by the way. Unforgivable.

Catch it! Oh, through the gap!

Jos Buttler is driving, but gets a thick edge and it flies through a fourth slip would be. It might have been short. It's a no ball anyway from Jasprit Bumrah, but that loose from Jos Buttler.

It brings up the 50 partnership too.

Ishant Sharma has looked better as this innings has progressed. He hasn't played for a while.

He beats Joe Root first up. It just held its line - it was a bit of a loose push from Root.

Jos Buttler moves to 18 with a squirt to the point boundary to end the over.

I can tell you that Virat Kohli has changed his bowler at the Pavillion End again.

    Ishant Sharma is back on.

This the fifth over at that end with the new ball. We saw one from Mohammed Siraj, two from Ishant Sharma, one from Mohammed Shami, and now back to Ishant.

    Virat isn't happy.

I think it's been a top-class batsmanship by Joe Root. How do you get out at Lords? Playing big booming drives and getting suckered in by the slope. He's left those shots in the locker. He has the ability to just knock it either side of the wicket. He's very difficult to bowl maidens too.
