Around 30 minutes until lunch. Mohammed Shami back into the attack for India.

This is Joe Root's highest score in the first innings of a home Test in his last 19 Tests, going back to the first Test against India in 2018.
His last home first-innings century was in 2017.
Joe Root now on to 77 not out with a clip off his legs to keep the strike. Jonny Bairstow is unbeaten on 38.

You get the feeling that Jonny Bairstow might try something here. He has faced a lot of dot balls in a row now.
Ishant Sharma has a lovely approach to the crease. Tall, smooth run up, and a beautiful action too. He gives Jonny Bairstow a wayward delivery down the leg side but the Yorkshireman misses out.

England have seen off Jasprit Bumrah for now and the experienced Ishant Sharma gets his first go with the ball today.

I just can't understand why India are bowling Ravindra Jadeja against the slope. There is nothing there for him from that end.
Ravindra Jadeja still wheeling away, round the wicket, with his left-arm spin to the right-handers. He raps Joe Root on the pad but, with the exception of the excitable Rishabh Pant, India appeal half-heartedly.
The ball is going down the slope and missing leg stump and Virat Kohli has one review left, which he isn't burning on that.

Jonny Bairstow has faced 14 dot balls in a row.
Andrew Strauss says on commentary that England just need to see off this spell from Jasprit Bumrah and that's a pretty good assessment. He's easily been the best of India's bowlers this morning.
An extravagant leave by Jonny Bairstow as he plonks his front foot down way in front off stump and raises his bat high out the way, as if he is Christopher Lambert in Highlander.

India are trying to encourage Joe Root to play the big sweep. They have brought all the fielders up on the on side.
Ravindra Jadeja clocks up four dots before Joe Root plops one into the off side and sets off a brisk single. Disciplined stuff from England.

Over the last year or so we've seen some indifferent Test match batting from England where you think 'oh no', but that hour was as good an hour of Test match batting that we've seen.
There was real control and calmness. There was none of those big flashing drives from Jonny - he left the ball nicely.
Jasprit Bumrah holds the ball in both his hands almost like he is clasping them together trying to squeeze the last drops of sauce out of a ketchup bottle.
A flashy waft outside off stump to a good delivery by Joe Root, and after the ball sails past the edge of his bat the England skipper ticks himself off for the momentary lapse in focus.
A ball later and Root plays it very late with soft hands and the ball escapes the dive of Virat Kohli and he picks up four.

Ravindra Jadeja is bowling at the wrong end surely?
Ravindra Jadeja continues after drinks. It's a fairly uneventful over with both Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow fairly watchful at this stage as they both gather their concentration for another over from Jasprit Bumrah to come.
Haseed Hameed went 1,717 days between England Test appearances. Yesterday he marked his return with the ultimate cricketing indignity: a golden duck.
Every cricketer from club to international level will know the feeling. Stephan Shemilt discusses the collective sense of heartbreak, devastation and desolation at Lord's when Hameed was bowled first ball...
