That was a terrific over by Jasprit Bumrah. He was really, really challenging Jonny Bairstow's defence, but he has weathered the storm.

Testing lines from Jasprit Bumrah whose various moving parts are starting to clunk into gear. He strikes Jonny Baristow on the inner thigh as the England attempts to get himself in line.

A ball later Baristow edges one but it falls short of the India slip cordon.

    Another maiden.

James Anthony: I always find it hard to criticise Bairstow but I can’t help feeling that he owes England a big Test score at some point soon. Today would be good.

Jonny Bairstow neatly paddles Ravindra Jadeja for four to break any hint of pressure India were attempting to exert.

A risky-ish single from Joe Root later in the over after he dinked one from Jadeja into the leg-side. Root hesitates but Jonny Baristow is committed with his running to the danger end. The throw misses the stumps, but would have been close with a direct hit.

Kumar Sangakkara, the MCC president, is in our hotel, which is just across the road. The receptionist mustn't be a cricket fan. As I left I heard him explaining "first name Kumar, K-U..."

Ravindra Jadeja races through an over in double quick time. Little to worry England as they keep the scoreboard moving with some deft flicks. Nothing to cause alarm, or rushes of blood to the head.

Rishabh Pant fairly subdued, by his standards, behind the stumps. Virat Kohli briefly off the field.

Jasprit Bumrah is not happy. A wayward throw from Ishant Sharma gives England a second run via overthrows.

Joe Root and Bairstow milk another couple of singles later in the over.

    India not really threatening much.

Virat Kohli won't admit it but in the back of his mind he will be thinking about whether he made a mistake leaving Ravichandran Ashwin out.

Jonny Bairstow has been fluent today. Here's one of his boundaries from moments ago.

Baristow hasn't got a Test hundred in England since May 2016 when he made 140 against Sri Lanka at Headingley.

It always amazes me when the spinner bowls from the Pavillion End. If you are going to bowl that end then you at least need a short leg for the one that drifts in.

Another change, and it's the left-arm spin of Ravindra Jadeja.

It was a great fightback by England yesterday. They are hanging in, they are playing well, and Joe Root has looked wonderful.

Jasprit Bumrah into the attack for India as Virat Kohli shuffles his pack. "Wait, wait, wait" exclaims Joe Root to his fellow Yorkshireman after dabbing one into the covers before turning down the run.

A single through mid-wicket brings a few balls later brings up a half-century stand between Root and Jonny Bairstow.
