A chap in the upper Warner Stand is almost having as bad a time as the England batsmen. A lady coming down the stairs has just spilled tea all over him.

This Byes chap should be promoted up the order. Regularly outscores England's top three.

Just a Joe Root single from the 20th over. England have seen off a third of the tally that we started with. It hasn't been pretty watching, and three wickets down is a big concern.

Rishabh Pant seems to have broken a bracelet he wears. It was in Virat Kohli's pocket, and then the India skipper went to put it on the ear of Pant.

Jonny Bairstow manoeuvres through the leg side to pick up a single, before Joe Root keeps the strike with a drop and run single into the covers.

The groundstaff have just moved the electronic advertising boards in front of the hover cover. Are they expecting some rain?

PirateTawnee: I think Simon in Norfolk (14:38) is giving England too much credit. I can see Australia winning 7 or 8-0, despite it being only a 5-match series.

India have six fielders on the leg side for Joe Root. A leg slip, a square leg, a short mid-wicket, a mid-on and then a fine leg and deep square-leg.

It doesn't stop the England captain picking up a single, though. He's up to 29 off 48 balls now.

What you should do on a fifth-day pitch is hold it back a bit and try to hit the stumps as much as possible.

More excitement from the India fielders as Joe Root gets a leading edge, as he looks to work through the on side. Backward point was vacant though, and it flew down there for a single.

Jonny Bairstow is up and running too, via a flick down to fine leg.

That was close. Almost a great catch by Pant. Maybe on his day he would have gathered that.

  12. Eng 53-3published at 17 overs

In fact I think that is a dropped catch by Rishabh Pant. I didn't quite catch it live, but Pant got a hand to it. It would have been an excellent catch, but that could prove pretty costly come 18:00 BST.

There are just overs 20 minutes till tea. England really can't afford to lose any more wickets before then.

This is the third time this year England's top three have been dismissed for less than 10. Before this year it had not happened since 2008.

Joe Root picks up another boundary with a very fine glance round the corner. That had Rishabh Pant interested.

Virat Kohli brings in the leg slip.

Jonny Bairstow walks out and the game is back on again. He's already having a chirp and chat with Virat Kohli.

If India get him they have Jos Buttler who is not in great form - I saw him working on his technique for a long time with Paul Collingwood this morning.

Dan Lawrence ran out a drink to Joe Root at the fall of that wicket. What could he possibly say to him? "Please don't get out, skipper, else we're well and truly stuffed."

Jonny Bairstow is welcomed by a bouncer from Ishant Sharma.

Bairstow looks to duck, and the ball flicks off the top of his helmet and runs away for four leg byes.
