Target 272
Joe Root is dealing exclusively in boundaries here.
He flicks Jasprit Bumrah really fine to move to 16.
He does. Billy Root is currently playing for Glamorgan against Essex in the One-Day Cup semi-final.
Time for a call-up?

Does Joe Root have any brothers?
Pete in Oxford
Target 272
Haseeb Hameed is forward and back in defence against Ravindra Jadeja. A maiden first up for the left-armer.
Here's the life that Hameed got earlier.

This is what Test match batting is all about. It's a battle of wills. You have to go out there and face it down. It's really gladiatorial. I think you need some fortitude about yourself and inevitably some people fail.
An early look at spin for India.
Ravindra Jadeja replaces Mohammed Shami.

Simon's 20-2 (see 13:59) suddenly seems quite decent.
Andrew, Norwich
Target 272
The India slip cordon are stood extremely close together. Nothing is going to get in between them.
Joe Root picks up another boundary with a trademark steer down to third. He's up to 12.
Target 272
Now Jasprit Bumrah sends one down the leg side for four byes.
England could win this in byes and no-balls...

There is a ball an over which really tests the outside edge. It is swinging both ways for Mohammed Shami. I see Alastair Cook made 68 for Essex in the Royal London One-Day Cup semi-final against Glamorgan. Colin Cowdrey was called up in his forties in 1974-75 to tour Australia!
Target 272
Haseeb Hameed lets the rest of the over go safely by. Mohammed Shami didn't quite get his line right in that over.
There are a minimum of 52 overs for England to survive.
Target 272
Mohammed Shami twice fires wildly down the leg side for four byes.
They should really be wides. Rishabh Pant had absolutely no chance.

Just put a bet on the Australia to win the Ashes 5-0. After watching these openers. How long do the selectors keep their jobs?

You get the impression that if Joe Root nicks off England will really start to feel the pressure. The stress will start to go through the rest of the dressing room. I can't think of a Test match where's there been such a fantastic turnaround. Within the blink of an eye, England are hanging on.
Target 272
Joe Root blocks and leaves the rest of the over.
We're seeing replays of the India players getting in the face of the England batters.
This is going to be a huge mental test, alongside a test of their techniques.
Here are how the two England openers fell...

That was the shot of a man in form by Joe Root. A really fine shot.
Target 272
Joe Root crunches a pull shot to the square leg boundary.
I don't want to say anything else in case I put the mockers on him.

What a situation for Haseeb Hameed to come into on a king pair. He's looked organised, though. Having the skipper there with him will help. England should be looking at Dawid Malan now - he seems to be out in the cold for some reason.
This is Haseeb Hameed's first Test since November 2016.
He struggled with finger injuries during the early days of his careers, before a loss of form saw him released by Lancashire.
He has battled hard at Nottinghamshire in the last few years, and has ended up back on the Test stage.
