Craig Moore: This must be what it felt like to be Australian when Steve Smith plundered runs in the 2019 Ashes. Don't worry India fans...it gets easier. (It doesn't).
Darren: There are three certainties in life: death, taxes, and Joe Root passing 50.
Malan 41, Root 56
Oh. It was a no ball anyway.
Time for a drink. I wonder what Virat Kohli's going to say to his team. My guess is that he won't be particularly happy.
What's this? A play and a miss from Joe Root? Are you OK, Joe?

This could be carnage. This is going to be fun.
Andy Zaltzman
Test Match Special statistician
Joe Root's half-century came off 57 balls, and came via his seventh four.
It is his 73rd score of 50-plus in Test cricket - 22 of them have become centuries, including five of the previous six.
It is 18th 50-plus score in 23 Tests against India. He averages just under 62 against them.
Malan 40, Root 54
A couple more singles and Shami's first over with the new ball brings absolutely no alarms for this pair.
It's hard to explain how good Joe Root has looked. It just looks so simple. Here are some stats to prove it.

Can Joe Root double this up? It is a great opportunity for him. That is trademark shot too - that backfoot punch.

Joe Root is in a remarkable run of form. He doesn't let his team down.
Eng 236-2
What a way to get there - another classic Root backfoot punch to the cover boundary.
When he came out to bat today, it felt like a fifty was just inevitable.

That was driven with authority by Dawid Malan. The Western Terrace enjoyed it.

Dawid Malan has batted with great control and patience so far. It is all about the mind when you switch formats.
Malan 40, Root 45
Bumrah gets some swing, but Malan negotiates it pretty comfortably.
And from the last ball, he brings out a glorious cover drive to the boundary. That's up there with one of the shots of the day.

So far in this Test match India have been very, very clumsy.
Jasprit Bumrah takes the new ball, unsurprisingly. He bowls a full toss first up that Dawid Malan can't capitalise on.

I like this 'shoes off if you love Joe Root' chant.
They are going to have cold feet. It is a frosty day.

Joe Root is enjoying himself. He scampers a two down to third man in almost T20 style. He then plays a lovely cover drive to the fielder on the boundary, settles for a single - until he's gifted another one via an overthrow.
These two look so, so comfortable. India have got to make things happen with the new ball if they have any chance of getting back into the game.

It is solid from Joe Root and Dawid Malan. The odd ball has beaten the outside edge but there has been hardly any movement for India, which means they've had hardly any hope of getting four or five quick wickets.
It is just a matter of England keeping their concentration and discipline and they should be able to bat the day out and have a really healthy lead.

Shot! It's not a bad ball from Jadeja but Root casually gets down on one knee and sweeps it to the boundary.
One more over until the new ball is due.
