Eng 215-2published at 78 overs
Malan 34, Root 36
There are so many stats out there proving just how rare it is for England's batting to be doing so well.
I'm not complaining but it does feel strange.

All of England's top four have passed 30 in the same innings for only the second time since March 2013.
They have played 108 Tests in that time. Before that they had done so five times in 18 Tests between August 2011 and March 2013.
The last time they did it in the first innings of a Test was in Kolkata in December 2012.

That was a gift. Dawid Malan isn't going to miss out on those - it is a glorious delivery to receive.

Ravindra Jadeja lost his line and length and Dawid Malan will be relieved about that because he was starting to get into a little bit of a hole.
Short and wide from Jadeja, asking to be cut away for four and Dawid Malan gratefully accepts.
Another ridiculously quick over from the spinner.
Instead of me just banging on about how good Joe Root's been, here's a couple of boundaries for you to enjoy.
Malan 30, Root 35
Just the single from the over and England's lead is now 132.
Mohammed Siraj replaces Ishant Sharma. He beats Dawid Malan's outside edge with a beauty third ball.
Virat Kohli signals a thumbs up of approval.

That is the fifty partnership between Joe Root and Dawid Malan in just 70 balls.
Malan 29, Root 35
Four byes, as a ball from Jadeja misses bat, stumps and keeper.
Malan, the left hander, isn't looking entirely comfortable against the spinner, with the footmarks outside his off stump just causing some difficulties with spin and bounce.
A scampered single from Malan brings up the fifty partnership. Already?!

Anand: India will be chasing leather today and tomorrow until tea. Lost a great opportunity to dominate the game because of lack of batting discipline.

Joe Root has started really well.
Malan 28, Root 35
Poor Ishant Sharma. Even his good balls go for runs - he squares Joe Root up but the ball squirts off the edge and they sprint two.
Root then plays a picture perfect cover drive that is intercepted by a diving Ravindra Jadeja - who else?!
Daniel Norcross
Commentator on BBC Test Match Special
Again that was played with the minimum of fuss from Joe Root.
Oh this is just classic Joe Root. A backfoot punch, both feet off the ground, through the covers for four.
He looks in the mood.

There would have been a case for Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in this India line-up because it really hasn't done much for the India seamers and it should spin as the game progresses.
Malan 28, Root 29
Jadeja gets a bit of spin, but Malan negotiates it pretty comfortably.
That was a really quick over.

Ben: Root is a level above everyone else. Burns, Hameed and Malan have spent the innings batting at a strike-rate of 40 and then Root comes in and sits at a strike-rate of 100 from the get-go.

Joe Root again expertly doing a "how has he got to 30 that quickly?"
A better over from Ishant Sharma goes for just one, with Root cutting the ball away for a single from the final ball to hog the strike again.
Batting always looks so easy when he's doing it, doesn't it?
