    Test Match Special statistician

Joe Root has only come in with 150 on the board once since 2016. That was against Ireland in the second innings at Lord's in 2019.

The last time it happened in the first innings was in Abu Dhabi in October 2015.

The last time he came in with more than 100 on the board was the third Test against West Indies last summer. England have played 13 Tests since then.

Virat Kohli is chewing his gum, hands on hips. He isn't happy at all.

    Malan 28, Root 27

A single from the final ball and Root keeps the strike.

That ball deserved to be hit to the boundary - it wasn't a good ball. Joe Root just tapped it, it was clinical batting.

  5. Eng 195-2published at 70.5 overs

A bit of a freebie from Jadeja allows Root to flick off his legs to the square leg boundary. If there's one player you don't want to bowl a freebie to, it's Root.

And another! This one played straighter, but Root places it perfectly past mid on for another four. Wonderful batting.

That was a nice stroke from Joe Root.

I don't want to bang on about it, but my fielder would have been there instead of at mid-off. Root doesn't score runs through mid-off.

  7. Eng 187-2published at 70 overs

    Malan 28, Root 18

Dawid Malan tucks the ball away off his pads for one more, before Joe Root plays a lovely cover drive and some good running gets them three.

The DIY noise has stopped next door, by the way. I hope they're not following this live text...

Ishant Sharma really hasn't looked like his usual self.

  9. Eng 183-2published at 69.1 overs

Ishant Sharma is back on to bowl. Much like yesterday, he struggled for rhythm this morning.

Joe Root takes a single off the first ball, playing the ball late to backward point.

I have been quite impressed by Dawid Malan actually. It is a strange game because in recent times England's batting has just been about survival, but he's come in and got off the mark with a cover drive and then played three or four other positive shots.

It is a fantastic opportunity for him.

A maiden over to start things off after lunch.

Here come Malan and Root, and Jadeja looks like he's going to bowl the first over after lunch.

And just as the players start to make their way back on to the pitch, my neighbour has chosen the perfect time to start some DIY. We haven't been living here for long so I've no idea what the etiquette is on whether I can politely tell them to stop?!

Working from home problems, I guess. I think I'll just have to deal with it.

Anyway, looking ahead to this afternoon session. England will obviously be the happier of the two sides - if Malan and Root bat through, we could be in for some fun in the evening if Bairstow, Buttler and Ali can come in with a licence to get England as many runs as possible in quick time.

How's this for a niche stat?!

Mark Puttick: England's innings is the first in men's Test history in which both openers made sixties & were both out bowled. Rory Burns 61 b Mohammed Shami, Haseeb Hameed 68 b Jadeja.

India didn't offer a huge amount of runs, England dried up a little bit and weren't able to take the game away from India.

England are nicely poised though. It is not often that Joe Root comes to the crease with runs on the board and has the opportunity to play in his style. The depth of Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali will hopefully be able to capitalise later. England are still massively in the driving seat.

Joe Root came to the crease in very unfamiliar circumstances in 2021 - with England in a good position.

Not that it makes any difference - he scurried his way to 14 not out at a run a ball.

Dawid Malan came to the crease, playing his first Test match innings since 2018 and looked pretty solid from ball one.

At lunch, he's unbeaten on 27.
