Not a bad day's play, it has to be said.

Callum's report from today's play is over here and the Test Match Special podcast will be available shortly.

We'll be back from 04:15 tomorrow morning to see what day two has to hold.

    In a bit.

Both Bairstow and Root were excellent. They trusted their defence. The players who play high-risk shots early give a chance. Bairstow is a good player of spin. He has good options. What he has to do tonight is realise he starts on nought tomorrow. If they can see off the first 40 minutes tomorrow there could be a big, big score for them.

It is not a minefield. It was very poor from Sri Lanka. England didn't have to work hard at all. It is very, very disappointing.

It surprised me. Sri Lanka haven't played much cricket but in home conditions you want to show how the cricket should be played.

    I expected a lot more.

I think Dom Bess would admit the ball didn't land where he wanted it to land today and he has a five-for. If he bowls like that in India against Virat Kohli then those long-hops aren't going to England fielders.

  6. 'I didn't feel like I bowled very well'published at 12:19 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2021

England spinner Dom Bess, who took 5-30: "It was bizarre - really bizarre. It has been a really funny one in terms of preparation. We have had quite a lot of rain. It has been a really strange one. We have put ourselves in a really good position. Rooty and Jonny batted really well because the wicket started to spin.

"I didn't feel like I bowled very well. I felt I was quite nervous. I hadn't bowled since the Test matches last summer in a game. I was pretty nervous and there was that short rubbish one that got cut [Dickwella wicket].

"I didn't feel I bowled as well as I know I can. That is cricket isn't it? There might be days bowl exceptionally well and go 1-100."

    Fantastic day for England.

Sri Lanka had two Tests in South Africa and England have had nothing in terms of preparation. The partnership with Root and Bairstow was exactly what was required by Sri Lanka.

Mathews and Chandimal are experienced pros. They were playing nicely and then played two rash shots. I thought it was so poor from Sri Lanka.

The plan: bat once, bat big, don't bat last on this pitch.

Not foolproof, but not a bad one - and England have got a decent platform to work from.

  10. 'County average isn't everything'published at 12:11 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2021

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I don't think Dan Lawrence's average in county cricket is any reason not to pick him for Test cricket because I wouldn't have played at all. I was only averaging 34 or 35 at the time, as was Marcus Trescothick, Paul Collingwood, Andrew Strauss.

County numbers are important but they are not everything when it comes to Test cricket. It's more about your mentality and character.

From what I hear from Essex, Anthony McGrath, the head coach down there, and Alastair Cook, both speak highly of him. They say he's got a character about him and he's quite quirky.

I feel sorry for him in a way that he's making his debut behind closed doors. This is one of the great Test venues - it's an amazing place to visit. He's just got to get on with it though, he's got a great opportunity. I always say to a young player if you get a century they can't take you out.

What a day for England. It is one of those days you sit down and think 'has that really happened?'

While I think it is right we hold back on criticism in this current time, some of the decision making from Sri Lanka batsmen will have Mickey Arthur furious.

Well. You'll see calmer days of Test cricket than that.

A succession of ridiculous shots before Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow restored some order.

Root just has to continue how he has been. He doesn't need to go through the gears from here. He has a perfect strike-rate for Test cricket.

This is Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow's sixth hundred partnership. The last one was in Colombo on the last tour of Sri Lanka. They only had one over 20 in their next eight.

    What a day.

England walk off trailing Sri Lanka by just eight after an extraordinary day.

Full from Asitha Fernando, onto the pads of Jonny Bairstow, and it'll be four despite a magnificent dive from Embuldeniya on the ropes.

You have to say this is England's most dominant opening day in Asia, then.

  19. How's stat?!published at 11:54 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2021

    Andy Zaltzman
    Test Match Special statistician

Only 21 times have England had a lead on day one of a Test having bowled opposition out. It happened most recently in the Ashes at Trent Bridge in 2015. Only once have they managed it in Asia in the UAE against Pakistan in 2012. On that occasion they were six wickets down by the end of the day.

  20. Eng 119-2published at 40 overs

Lasith Embuldeniya watches a full toss get clobbered by Joe Root but a sluggish outfield stops it reaching the boundary.

Whoops. No stopping that one, though, an even jucier delivery that Root gratefully spanks to the ropes. That's the 100 partnership up, too.
