After losing the toss Joe Root would have thought if he could have Sri Lanka 230-8 it would be a great day.

We have talked about Sri Lanka's Test team and it is a sad state of affairs. They are going through a massive transition but this England team are getting better.

Joe Root clips a single off his toes and Jonny Bairstow, wisely, defends his way through the rest of the over.

You can't really criticise England today. They have done everything asked of them.

    Root 59, Bairstow 39

A valiant diving effort down on the boundary is in vain as the fielder knees the ball into the boundary rope for four, courtesy of Joe Root's bat.

This partnership is creeping towards triple figures.

It might be worth Chandimal throwing the ball back to Fernando the seamer again. Just to change the pace up again. Bairstow has a problem with pace in his Test career.

In Test cricket in the past five years Sri Lanka's bowlers have the second worst dot ball percentage.

    Six overs remaining

The man at deep mid-wicket is having to field in the middle of the crows, which all go scattering at him as Jonny Bairstow hammers a sweep shot in his direction.

Oh, I LOVE a Colin the Caterpillar. If Joe Root tons up then I might buy one in celebration. Is it unacceptable to eat one by yourself?

Anyway, Niroshan Dickwella has just tried the most optimistic appeal I've seen in ages to a delivery that missed Joe Root by a yard. Excellent.

Root just has to work on his mind and concentration levels. Getting to 20 is the hardest part of batting. Over the last few years he has lost a split-second of his concentration. I think that is what he will be working on.

238 runs today and 12 wickets. You'd say that's value for your money if, er, you were allowed to watch at the ground.

50 half-centuries for Joe Root to just 17 centuries. What a start to a huge 2021 it would be...

A 50th fifty for Joe Root!

He came in with England in a pickle but he's played very well, reaching his half-century from 94 balls. Now, can he double it?

  18. Eng 95-2published at 33.2 overs

Another four for Joe Root, this time using his botttom hand to hoick the ball through mid-on. Lovely.

Root hustles back to a leg break and cracks it for two to take him to 49.

Root and Bairstow pair have played the way you would expect Test players to play. They have not taken any risks.

  20. Eng 89-2published at 33 over

Another big sweep from Joe Root - he's played that shot so well - and he moves with serene ease to 43.
