Lawrence has had a very good method so far. He has that little press forward that allows him to smother the ball, and also get back if it's short. That's what he did with that cut shot.

Four for Dan Lawrence, hopping deep into his crease and cracking a short Lasith Embuldeniya delivery away to the boundary. Two despairing Sri Lanka fielders chase after it and end up escorting it into the rope.

A full toss is dispatched by Joe Root first up, but only for a single, before Wanindu Hasaranga whirls a welcoming googly down at Dan Lawrence. Lawrence didn't pick that, judging by the massive smile on his face as he casts his eyes down at the pitch.

As a spinner you want to create pressure and make them hit the ring fielders, and make them play a big shot, especially on a pitch where some are spinning and sticking in the pitch.

Batters like to be able to knock it around. It's too easy - it gets their blood flowing.

One thing Joe Root - and England, actually - do well is work the singles. Quick on their feet and alive to the gaps in the field.

Dan Lawrence, meanwhile, bravely leaves a delivery by Lasith Embuldeniya that bounces just over his stumps.

It is turning, you know. A little sharper from Lasith Embuldeniya, and Joe Root gets trapped in his crease as he tries to defend.

He gets forward to the next few before a back foot shimmy adds another easy couple of runs to the total.
