I get the feeling that Lawrence is itching. I hope he doesn't do something - sometimes you just have to play.

Dan Lawrence stands on one leg, flamingo style, as he sends a whippy drive all along the ground. A better over for Sri Lanka.

In 74 first-class matches Dan Lawrence averages 35 against pace but 63.5 against spin.

Lawrence has had a very good method so far. He has that little press forward that allows him to smother the ball, and also get back if it's short. That's what he did with that cut shot.

  5. Eng 160-3published at 51 overs

    Lawrence 17, Root 82

Four for Dan Lawrence, hopping deep into his crease and cracking a short Lasith Embuldeniya delivery away to the boundary. Two despairing Sri Lanka fielders chase after it and end up escorting it into the rope.

Matt R: On this pitch a 75-100 first-innings lead could be decisive. England will hope for more of course.

  7. Eng 154-3published at 50 overs

    Lead by 20

A full toss is dispatched by Joe Root first up, but only for a single, before Wanindu Hasaranga whirls a welcoming googly down at Dan Lawrence. Lawrence didn't pick that, judging by the massive smile on his face as he casts his eyes down at the pitch.

A change of bowler - here's Wanindu Hasaranga.

The previous maiden was in the 20th over of the innings - 29 overs ago. In the last five years in Test cricket, only Bangladesh have a lower dot-ball percentage than Sri Lanka.

  10. Eng 153-3published at 49 overs

Blimey. Lasith Embuldeniya gets a delivery to spit and bounce on Dan Lawrence, fizzing up so high that the keeper ends up taking the ball at shoulder height.

    Oh, it's a maiden!

Chandimal was on 22 when Lawrence spilled a sitter at cover. He only made 28, so Lawrence, on 11, is in credit now...

How many runs did Chandimal make after Lawrence dropped him? Presumable, as is village cricket tradition, you don't really count his runs until he makes up those lost runs first?

  13. Eng 153-3published at 48 overs

    Lead by 18

Dan Lawrence misses out on a full toss from Perera but he comes down the pitch to work another easy single away to end the over.

Former England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

As a spinner you want to create pressure and make them hit the ring fielders, and make them play a big shot, especially on a pitch where some are spinning and sticking in the pitch.

Batters like to be able to knock it around. It's too easy - it gets their blood flowing.

  15. Eng 149-3published at 47 overs

One thing Joe Root - and England, actually - do well is work the singles. Quick on their feet and alive to the gaps in the field.

Dan Lawrence, meanwhile, bravely leaves a delivery by Lasith Embuldeniya that bounces just over his stumps.

Dan Lawrence looks confident - he looks like he owns the crease.

  17. Eng 148-3published at 46 overs

Marnus Labuschagne is out, over in Brisbane. Another skied pull shot, but he had made 108, so, y'know.

Overnight, without really being used, the pitch has moved on. It's taken a different character.

  19. Eng 144-3published at 45 overs

    Root 77, Lawrence 6

It is turning, you know. A little sharper from Lasith Embuldeniya, and Joe Root gets trapped in his crease as he tries to defend.

He gets forward to the next few before a back foot shimmy adds another easy couple of runs to the total.

Dan Lawrence is the eighth England player to make their Test debut in Sri Lanka.
