Joe Root has scored 88 runs so far with some form of sweep shot.

He's now on the third highest score by a visiting batsman in Sri Lanka, overtaking Brian Lara's 221.

The highest is Chris Gayle's 333 in Galle in 2010.

Joe Root gets a single off the first ball of Lasith Embuldeniya's latest over before Stuart Broad sweeps a couple through deep backward square.

Absolutely cannot wait to see what sort of hilarity Stuart Broad has planned for his stint at number 11.

Mark Wood's face is a picture. He's attempted a sweep, made an absolute meal of it and toe-ended the ball into the air, which has made it easy for Niroshan Dickwella to run round and take a simple catch.

    England lead by 271.

  9. What have you missed?published at 05:54 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2021

What do you mean, you didn't set your alarm for 4.15am? Shame on you.

You've missed an action-packed morning in Galle, where England captain Joe Root - 168 overnight - cruised to his fourth Test double century amid a flurry of three wickets in two overs.

Jos Buttler fell for 30, Sam Curran was cleaned up first ball and Dom Bess did his best impersonation of a village cricketer when he was run out in a comical mix-up with Root.

Jack Leach didn't last long either, although, with England's lead currently worth 268, their wobble hardly matters.

    Root 223, Wood 0

Joe Root is struck on the pad by Shanaka but the lbw appeal is turned down, and Sri Lanka have no reviews left. I think it hit him outside the line.

Root celebrates with a glorious nudge off the pads for four.

Do you reckon Joe Root is thinking he wouldn't mind a little bit of red ink here?

It does miracles for the average.

Feel a special “in it togetherness” with the England cricket fans getting up each day. Even been able to resemble a normal human making it to 9.30pm each night! Girlfriend and 3 kids only noticing some small levels of tiredness when I put the remote control in the fridge late yesterday.

Hitting the top of middle stump!

Jack Leach went a little too deep in his crease as he tried to work it off his pads, and there was nowhere to go. Still, as a bowler, he'll have like the look of this pitch...
