Joe Root is the seventh England player to reach 8,000 Test runs.

He is the fastest in terms of matches, and the second fastest in terms of innings behind Kevin Pietersen. Root did it in his 178th, Pietersen in his 176th.

Root is the third youngest to reach the landmark behind Alastair Cook and Sachin Tendulkar.

England have been very busy this morning, as Jos Buttler whirls his wrists into another reverse sweep.

Joe Root tries the same shot and misses, before ignoring a very optimistic lbw appeal from Perera.

Thanks very much for helping to solve the ham and cheese sandwich breakfast dilemma yesterday, it is duly ready along with a croissant. My problem now is do I have orange juice or coffee to go with it?

A horrible fumble in the deep, the fielder basically running past the ball, allows Joe Root to nab two runs off a sweep.

That takes the England captain to 8,000 Test runs. He's the second fastest to get there, in terms of innings played, after Kevin Pietersen.

He is just so good. Look how low he is able to get. He gave the ball time to spin and then watched it all the way and played it with quick hands through the shot.

He's the master of that shot.

Hello. Dilruwan Perera's second delivery skids on to Jos Buttler, who gets squared up, before Buttler unfurls that terrific reverse sweep and swats the next delivery for four.

Buttler plays a slightly more ungainly sweep that sends the ball looping over the keeper, before Joe Root sweeps a single of his own.

It'll be off-spinner Dilruwan Perera to bowl to Jos Buttler.

What a lovely way to get off the mark for the day. It was beautifully played. That is just someone resuming where he left off.

    Four!

Too full and wide from Asitha Fernando and Joe Root square drives it as merrily as you'd like to the boundary.

You already feel that England may have enough, but maybe that is a bit complacent.

They will want to bat on and on though, with no real time constraints, and it's a terrific opportunity for Joe Root to get a really big score.

A solid clonking drive from Joe Root, and we're off.

We haven't seen a ball bowled for an absolute age after the post-tea session was washed out.

But England are looking to build a big lead; they are resuming on 320-4, already in front of Sri Lanka by 185 runs, with captain Joe Root unbeaten on 168.
