After the loss of the two early wickets this is turning into Sri Lanka's session.
Dom Bess bowls one delivery and then Jonny Bairstow puts on an Eastenders-worthy performance of staring at the ball and holding it suspiciously in his hand. I admire the effort but it's had absolutely no effect whatsoever.

We have not seen anything like the turn of the first Test.
England have just asked the umpire to check the state of the ball. Which, after one hour and 18 minutes on the first morning of the first day, does not bode well.

England are making it too easy for Sri Lanka. There are too many gaps.
Thirimanne 40, Mathews 19
Singles, singles and more singles for Sri Lanka...
...right up until Lahiru Thirimanne gets low and sweeps Jack Leach's final delivery with aplomb to the boundary.

Chris Podd: Jack Leach seems like a great guy, sadly not convinced by his bowling
At lunch, TMS will be discussing India's absolutely remarkable victory over Australia in the final Test of their recent series - a result which saw them retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Rishabh Pant might be my new favourite cricketer.

Sri Lanka have done pretty well. They are creeping back into the Test match. Thirimanne has played well.
The 50 partnership comes up in fine fashion for Sri Lanka, courtesy of Angelo Mathews taking a Jack Leach delivery off his toes and swatting it with disdain through mid-wicket.
More runs come, this time through a fine thwack though cover, and Sri Lanka settle themselves with six runs from the over.

Bess just seems to bowl a ball that relieves pressure.
Loose from Dom Bess, short and a bit leggy, and only a fine chase and dive by Jack Leach on the fine-leg fence stops Angelo Mathews picking up three runs.
We absolutely need to discuss Colin de Grandhomme's mullet, by the way. Chris Waddle would be so proud.
Best/worst haircuts in sport, anyone?

Galle looks absolutely glorious - and to add to the picturesque nature, Angelo Mathews has donned a cap to face Jack Leach.
Just waking up?
Well you've missed James Anderson doing James Anderson things.
He took two wickets in his third over to put England on top in these early exchanges.
Kusal Perera played a horrible shot in edging a flashing drive to slip and Oshada Fernando played onto his own stumps for a duck.
Sri Lanka were 7-2 but Lahiru Thirimanne and Angelo Mathews have steadied things since.
Phil Tufnell
Former England spinner on BBC Test Match Special
England will be delighted with the two early wickets. They will just have to stick in and wait for another mistake.
It looks flatter than the first Test.
A nice over from Dom Bess, who finds a bit of drift back into the left-handed Thirimanne, and a single is all Sri Lanka can poach.
Now THAT is a stat.
Mark Wood is off and Dom Bess is on.
