  3. SL 44-2published at 16 overs

Four to Lahiru Thirimanne, all bottom hand as he drives Jack Leach firmly through cover.

Mathews has just given Thirimanne a fist bump. Stop hitting his hand!

  5. SL 37-2published at 15 overs

Two for Thirimanne, before he's struck on the glove by a lifter of a delivery from Mark Wood. Ouch.

Out comes the ice spray - I'm never quite sure how much use that actually is.

Mathews just sliced that a tad.

  7. SL 34-2published at 14 overs

    Mathews 7, Thirimanne 20

    Where's that come from?!

Out of nowhere, Angelo Mathews clears his foot and hoists Jack Leach high over long-off. I'm not sure he got all of that, either, but it's got enough on it to bounce over the boundary rope.

70% humidity in Galle today. Get the drinks on.

  10. How's stat?!published at 05:34 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2021

    Andy Zaltzman
    Test Match Special statistician

The absence of Dimuth Karunaratne at the top of the order is a problem for Sri Lanka. Since the 2016-17 winter he averages 41 in 37 Test with seven hundreds. They are also missing Dhananjaya de Silva who is their third-ranked batsman.

  11. SL 28-2published at 13 overs

Shot! Width from Mark Wood, tempting Lahiru Thirimanne, and the opening batsman obliges with a huge swing of the bat that larrups the ball through cover for four.

Thirimanne gets a back of a length delivery in response, and he whips one hand of the bat as he shovels it to point.

I would have manoeuvred my squad so that every player was available for the four Tests in India. Particularly someone like Jos Buttler. I would have had him missing this series and then being available for India.

  13. SL 24-2published at 12 overs

A maiden from Jack Leach, as we whizz towards the first drinks break.

  15. SL 24-2published at 11 overs

Speedy from Mark Wood, getting up to 92mph with his fourth delivery, and Lahiru Thirimanne admonishes himself as he gets squared up in defence.

  16. Postpublished at 05:20 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2021

Angelo Mathews has called for some extra protection, which means one thing - Mark Wood is about to bowl.

It looks extremely hot. Sam Curran already looks like he has bowled for a day and a half.

  18. SL 22-2published at 10 overs

Angelo Mathews is off the mark as Leach drops a bit short and he clips him off the back foot for a single. Tidy enough from the England left-armer first up.

  19. Postpublished at 05:16 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2021

And here is a change - Jack Leach will replace Sam Curran.

I was very surprised England did not rotate Mark Wood for Olly Stone. Wood bowled very well last week but I thought it was an opportunity to get overs into another bowler's legs.
