Here's a brief summary of the morning for those of you just joining us.
Jimmy Anderson continues to defy age. Having replaced Stuart Broad in this match he bowled an immaculate first spell and took two wickets in his third over.
Kusal Perera edged a hideous drive to slip and Sri Lanka's new number three Oshada Fernando played on for a duck.
Sri Lanka were 7-2 but since then the hosts have dug in. On what looks a very flat pitch, Lahiru Thirimanne and Angelo Mathews have reached 76-2 at lunch.
Absolutely iconic but seriously... what was he thinking?

Vipassana: How about Brazil's Ronaldo from the 2002 football World Cup for worst haircut in sport? Wouldn't of thought many hairdressers made a roaring trade in copycat haircuts off that beauty.
We're also discussing some of sports most iconic (questionable) haircuts after Colin de Grandhomme turned up for a game in New Zealand looking like Chris Waddle...

If you told England they'd have two wickets in the first session in these conditions having lost the toss they'd almost certainly have taken it.
Jimmy Anderson didn't take long to get into the grove.
Since then, however, Lahiru Thirimanne and Angelo Mathews have looked very comfortable.

It looks a road. It is a good toss to have won. Sri Lanka have a great chance to go big. England will know if they get a couple of wickets they have a glimmer.

This could be a long, hard day.
Thanks Amy. Others may disagree. You're very kind.
I think we're going to be in for the long haul in this Test.
I am off for a traditional post-first session nap. The effervescent Matthew Henry will take you through to tea.

Matt's gone early on the draw chat...

Matt R: Despite Jimmy's early breakthroughs, this looks an excellent pitch to bat first on. It's early to say this but I think England will do well to get away with a draw.
Two early wickets for England, but Sri Lanka have recovered from a poor start and into a place of relative comfort.
Lahiru Thirimanne gets a succession of full and short deliveries from Dom Bess but he can't find anything other than singles.
I think this will be the final over before lunch, unless Dom Bess whizzes his way through it.

On days three and four I am sure we will see the ball spinning and bouncing. Today Sri Lanka have a great chance because it is not spinning, swinging or seaming.
Shot! Angelo Mathews cashes in as Sam Curran overpitches and a full delivery is clipped mercilessly for four.
A stat on the screen tells us Joe Root has never lost a Test in Asia as captain - played four, won four. That might change when they head to India...
Sam Curran is coming back on for a post-lunch burst.
