With that comforting stat in mind, Lahiru Thirimanne leaves a delivery from James Anderson that seems to shape back in at the last second and just rises over the top of off stump.

Thirimanne jabs down on the next delivery and looks alarmed as an under edge briefly threatens to hit the stumps, before he dabs a quick single into the off side to get Sri Lanka off the mark.

That is the way to get Perera. He plants his front foot.

    Umpire's call!

That wasn't far away at all...

I don't think it has swung back enough.

Kusal Perera has played all around this and he's been struck on the front pad.

The technology is taking an absolute age. Someone go hit the top of the telly, that normally makes it work.

    Well then!

Sam Curran strikes Kusal Perera on the pad with his second ball and after a protracted appeal is unsuccessful, England send it upstairs.

There are three slips and a gully. I think we should play a game of how long will they last.

  14. SL 0-0published at 1 over

An over of off stump huggers from Jimmy Anderson and Lahiru Thirimanne, wisely, keeps his bat out of the way of all of them.

I saw Stuart Broad hanging around at the toss and there was a wry smile when Dinesh Chandimal won it.

A solid defensive shot from Lahiru Thirimanne, and we're off.

Right, shall we have some cricket?

Kusal Perera and Lahiru Thirimanne are out in the middle for Sri Lanka and it'll be James Anderson to get England going.

It's a big toss to win because I think it will be a result wicket. England need to strike early because I suspect it'll be a slightly shorter game and 230 might prove to be a good first innings score for Sri Lanka.
